I have a dual GPU Setup with a integrated Intel iGPU and an Vega 56 AMD GPU. My monitors are attached to the AMD GPU.

Actual results:
The videoplayer only shows a green video (shown in the attached screenshot), when using the renderD129. When using rendererD128 everything works fine and h264 content is decoded using vaapi. Following you find an excerpt from the console output when using renderD129 and the green output is shown.

Expected results:
The video should play back correctly using renderD129 (Intel GPU) even when the monitors are not attached to the IGPU. I want to use this setup to use the VP9 capabilities of the iGPU which is not present on the AMD-GPU.

If I understood correctly:
The decoded image is held in GPU memory. One must use the same GPU for decoding that is used for the browser's OpenGL rendering engine which imports the decoded image without copy.
The benefit of hardware video decoding would be lost if it would be copied to system memory and then to the other GPU.

I have no deeper understanding of the tech stack but software-decoding 4k streams is cpu intensive. Is the performance hit by copying the decoded frame gpu->host->gpu that large that it is useless?

Sorry but this is a wontfix, at least for the foreseeable future. The whole point of DMABUF sharing is that the decoded video is in the video memory and directly accessible for Webrender. Making cross-GPU sharing work properly is quite hard and in parts is an unsolved problem on Linux.
I want to use this setup to use the VP9 capabilities of the iGPU which is not present on the AMD-GPU.
All you need to do is make FF run on the Intel GPU as a whole (so it shows up in about:support
). In modern DEs (Gnome, KDE etc.) this should be possible by right-clicking on the icon and selecting something about the GPU to use.
Just curious: does it work with gfx.webrender.compositor: true
in about:config
?
Or it wouldn't work without with https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/8 support on the client side?
(and seeing Potential TODO: write libva patch
in the MR above, probably it would be blocked by libva then)

AFAICS wp_linux_dmabuf_feedback
is indeed needed to make compositor integration work reliably on multi-GPU systems (in general). However right now, even with compositor integration we don't directly submit the ffmpeg decoded buffer to the compositor, but instead blit it to a Webrender picture cache tile (and convert from YUV to RGBA). I.e. right now there's no difference for hardware decoded video frames and other content. Does that answer your question? :)

Robert, isn't DRM Prime supposed to work here? Also we don't need to share that on WebRender on even gecko level, the dmabuf share across devices is implemented on kernel dmabuf level and we create EGL image over it - it's just matter of OpenGL implementation and/or kernel to share the buffers properly.

IIRC (from the EGL/Mesa implementation) the first issue is that both GPUs need to understand the same buffer modifiers (which I assume is the issue in comment 10). Maybe we can work around that by detecting the multi-gpu case and force a linear layout, but IIUC it's not trivial, see e.g. this. So it would at least complicate our code.
Then there are performance issues. In this case, Intel to AMD, it's probably ok, but the other way around is likely horribly slow (the AMD driver would need to relocate the buffer from vram to system ram to make it visible to the Intel driver).
AFAIK there are ongoing discussions in the Wayland channels on how to best make multi-GPU cases faster in a clean way (on Windows, the proprietary drivers apparently use non-generic/driver specific workarounds to make this work).
Well ok, I was a bit too fast closing this as wontfix. But I wouldn't hold my breath that we solve this before Wayland compositors and Mesa implement this better than they do right now (wp_linux_dmabuf_feedback
being a big step in that direction IIUC).
Edit: Mesa appears to make an extra blit on every swapBuffers right now.

I have similar issue, although in my case it is similar to bug 1721053 in a sense that I have 2 GPUs and iGPU has no outputs at all, yet it has wider decoding capabilities (e.g. it has VP9 decoder while my main GPU has not)

same here , i try to use AMD dGPU for rendering/output and Intel iGpu for "video decode only" but fail.
After enable wayland software option, ffmpeg log say vaapi decoding depends on hardware wayland ...

Any news on this? I absolutely would love if this could be solved in any way! I also have a hybrid laptop with Intel iGPU and NVIDIA dGPU, and while it works perfectly fine with intended iGPU as vector for hardware acceleration, this is only with my iGPU set as display on my desktop environment, KDE Wayland. When switching to my dGPU as main display, I cannot for the life of me tell Firefox to render hardware accel. off my iGPU even if other applications like mpv works fine with choosing either of my graphic cards. I thought LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=iHD MOZ_DRM_DEVICE=/dev/dri/renderD128
would solve it, but no dice. It still leaves my Intel iGPU as inactive according to my about:support.
