Steps to reproduce:

When i try to open external link from other program like Thunderbird, Liferea or KeepasXC always i receive the same massage error. The previous version, Firefox 93, work perfectly.

Actual results:

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To use Firefox, you must first close the existing Firefox process, restart your device, or use a different profile.

Expected results:

Firefox should open the links.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Widget: Gtk' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

I use MX-Linux 19.4 AHS of 64 bits, based on Debian 10, without systemd.

I am also hitting this, with either an existing or a clean profile.

For me this is a regression from upgrading FF 93 to 94, using Mozilla binaries via Gentoo firefox-bin package.

Is it possible to enable some logging that could indicate what goes wrong?

I have deleted all profiles and created a new one but the problem still persists.
It's not a profile problem.

In my case this appears related to D-Bus: if I run the browser from a dbus-run-session -- bash shell, then opening additional tabs works from the same shell (i.e. when DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is available in the environment), otherwise it hangs as described.

In my case this appears related to D-Bus: if I run the browser from a dbus-run-session -- bash shell, then opening additional tabs works from the same shell (i.e. when DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is available in the environment), otherwise it hangs as described.

This may be Bug 1724242 - Firefox needs DBus session to run with remote.

To be clear, with that change running under a DBus session has become pretty much a hard requirement for Mozilla-provided binaries? Exporting MOZ_DBUS_REMOTE=0 doesn't seem to work around this.

Yes, Mozilla-provided binaries needs DBus for correct remote work.

Understood, thank you. Any chance this could fail in a more graceful fashion, or at least be documented better? In comment #8 I said,

Is it possible to enable some logging that could indicate what goes wrong?

and I still have no idea how to debug this, should anything similar come up in the future. I couldn't find values that MOZ_LOG accepts anywhere.

Frankly I don't know if there's any log for that. The message you see usually means that the profile is not accessible or it's locked by other FF instance. The non-working remote is a bit corner case here.
Sorry for the complications.

I just received the new version of Firefox 94.0.1 and the issue has not been fixed, I imagine it will be some security update.

I am seeing the same thing. On linux, I can open firefox93 on multiple X windows, firefox94 fails with the same 'not responding' error.
I use fluxbox with multiple windows. DBUS is running.

Firefox 94.0.1 does not fix the issue.

System environment: generic linux using fluxbox window manager

Steps to reproduce: in workspace 1, start firefox
Switch to workspace 2
start firefox

Expected behavior: firefox starts in workspace 2 normally.
Actual behavior: firefox fails to start with 'not responding' message.

Firefox <94 works correctly. Firefox 94 and 94.0.1 fails.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:94.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/94.0

Confirmed issue on Siduction (Debian sid base) with Firefox 94.0-2

Reproducible since it always happens when cron starts Firefox from entries in the logged in users crontab.
Versions prior to 94 opens the website as expected, but since 94 I'm only getting the 'not responding' error message.

The example below works properly when running in a terminal.
crontab example for opening a website at 08:00 every day:

DISPLAY=:0
0 8 * * * firefox --new-window https://www.example.site/foo > /dev/null 2>&1
Priority: -- → P2

An active DBus session is needed for Mozilla binaries to run correctly...so is DBus running?
Or you can rebuild Firefox with --disable-dbus flag set.

Also if that's a multi-user box, can be Bug 1553771 involved here?

Mine is a single user system, I do not have a user profile in /tmp and DBus is definitely running (and working).
Upgraded to 94.0.2-1, issue remains.

I just received the update to Firefox 95 and the bug hasn't been fixed yet.

I'm seeing this bug on Firefox v 95.0 running on Linux Debian Bullseye

The bug has not been eliminated in version 96 either. It has existed since version 94.
I usually run some tasks via cron, but now it doesn't work anymore.
You can test it with by running: sudo -u $(whoami) /path/to/firefox/firefox https://www.firefox.com
Before version 94, a new window was opened with the URL. From 94 on there is only the error message:
“Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To use Firefox, you must first close the existing Firefox process, restart your device, or use a different profile.”
I find it very unfortunate to have to use a different browser for cron jobs…

Meanwhile version 97 and there is no fix, not even an answer. I have outsourced my cron jobs to Chrome, heavy heart. Too little Linux users with Firefox?

The new Firefox 100 and Linux kernel 5.10.113 solve this bug, for me.

For me, this message appears and blocks the whole browser when trying to save a file because it takes time when my external HDD needs to come out of stand-by and it blocks the Gtk save file dialog.

It's mostly working with Firefox 100.0-1 here.

I'm running 101.0b5 on Win 11 and only recently I've started to see this message when I use keyboard shorcut assigned to my Firefox desktop shortcut to open it.
It happens only sometimes, like one of 30 times. But it's happening on both of my devices so this is probably some regression in 101. I open many windows during the day so I see this message almost every day.

This happens to me on Ubuntu 22.04 running Wayland, whenever is use Firefox-ESR browser which is NOT Snap version;

whenever i click a link on eg. Thunderbird, and Firefox-ESR is set as the standard application, it would open the link correctly (provided the firefox is not already open).
However, if i would then change to Telegram Desktop, and click there a link to open in Firefox-ESR, it would complain

'Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To use Firefox, you must first close the existing Firefox process, restart your device, or use a different profile.'

the same happens vice-versa, if i open a Telegram link first, then other links from Telegram would open; but if i then change to a link from Thunderbird, the same error happens again;
if i use SNAP Version, this error would not occur; but i prefer to use Firefox-ESR, hence i install it manually.
Please provide a solution.

"Firefox is already running but not responding" when clicking "Learn More" in PC Settings -> Windows Update to view the latest changelog to Windows.

I remember seeing topics about this quite a while ago and even experiencing the issue myself, possibly back when Firefox 94 was newly available and it seems this problem has returned.

Please file a new bug against Widget/Win32. This one is for Linux and should be fixed by DBus migration.
