Steps to reproduce:

For the last few days (about 3, I guess), Firefox Nightly has started doing this odd thing:

The page will appear to freeze (it won't update whilst I'm typing or clicking button will appear to do nothing). Switching away from the tab and back again, the page updates. This normally happens when I've just switched to a tab - but I've had a few times on GitHub, filling in commentary on a PR, when this has happened in the middle of typing the commentary.

Actual results:

Page appears to freeze, sometimes the whole page goes blank, but moving the mouse updates the cursor as I move over clickables. Anything I type doesn't seem to be reflected until I switch away to another tab and then back again.

Expected results:

The page should update as necessary.

BTW, I've tried a brand-new profile, just logged in to FF sync and then disabled all the plugins that were synced down and the issue continues. I can't really work without some of these extensions tho ):

Can you provide any steps to try to reproduce on my end?
Maybe mention all the pages you had open while you observed this issue? How many tabs/windows did you have at the time? This is specific to Github or you've experienced this in other websites too?
Could you attach your about:support information?

Steps to repro are difficult to define (sorry! I know this makes it much harder to fix a problem if it's not easily reproducable) - it was just happening all the time, then I made the new profile and I've stuck with it and it seemed to have stopped, but then started up again. I have been slowly re-enabling the extensions that I use. One of the extensions I kinda can't deal with out is Dark Reader, and I'm not sure if there's some odd interaction happening here, but only because sometimes tabs are entirely the kinda "default dark" color. However, I have had the issue even when Dark Reader was disabled (both through the extension and by disabling the extension), so I'm not sure if perhaps DR just exacerbates the problem?

Pages I've experienced this on include WhatsApp Web, Github, Twitter, Quip and a couple others, so I don't think it's endemic to a specific site, but the sites I've mentioned all have fairly "high-tech" interfaces - they aren't just plain-old pages like, eg, Hacker News.

Number of tabs open - typically I have about 10 pinned tabs and probably about another 2-10 open. I tend to clear up a lot by moving a tab I'm interested in as far left as possible and closing all tabs to the right. I'll do this whenever tab text starts getting a little iffy to read, so even getting to 10 extra tabs open is odd for me - typically the non-pinned tab count won't go past about 8.

On the day I reported this, it was practically blocking usage, but today I've only experienced it once or twice. Typically I can either refresh the page or sometimes it comes right after a bit of input (ie type blind and hope for the best).

Shows a partial render in firefox this morning. A few seconds after capturing this screenshot, the rest of the page rendered in. Before that, I could scroll past this point and back up again.

I even just got this in about:config - typing into the search bar, the list of matching items narrows and then just disappears. I found that pressing ctrl+space made them come back, but any further changes (delete a char, add a char) causes the whole pane to go blank. So I tried to come here to add a comment and this page did it - page appeared loaded, moving the mouse over the page shows cursor changes, I managed to click something to navigate, but the whole screen stayed blank. I went away to get my non-nightly firefox ready to use because I can't work like this, and when I came back, this page had rendered.

I'm assuming that since this affects about:config, it can't be from an extension?

Hi Davyd, thank you for the report.

Can you tell us a bit more about your setup? From the about:support info, I see three monitors and scaled resolution, is this correct?
I know this might be annoying to test out, but could you see if the issue persist with only one monitor with/without scaling?

We have had some issues with mixed refresh rate monitors in the past.

Yes, three "monitors":

• laptop screen, native 4k, but I run at 1920x1080 because multiple scalings across monitors often doesn't work as expected (not all apps adjust their scaling properly when moving from one monitor to the other)
• 2x 27" monitors running at 1920x1080
• all screens running at 100% scale because of the issue outlined above

I can try just the laptop tomorrow for a while perhaps - I can't run all day though, as this severely impacts my productivity

I switched to laptop only this morning, running 1920x1080, 100% scaling and found the issue almost immediately. For completeness' sake, I'm running the laptop display only at 4k with 200% scaling to see if that's any different.

Ok, initially, it seemed like the issue wasn't there, but I switched away from FF Nightly for a moment and when I came back, the pinned tab that was open was blank - I switched between all tabs to find blanks, switched back to settings to reset my default browser back to FF Vanilla, and when I switched back to Nightly, the pages had rendered again. So this issue doesn't seem to be affected by resolution, scaling or monitor counts.

Hi Davyd, can you check if pref "widget.windows.window_occlusion_tracking.enabled=false" address the problem for you?
pref could be changed from about:config. Thank you.

I've been running Nightly with that setting for all of today and haven't seen the issue arise yet, so it's looking like that might provide a workaround or a hint as to where the issue lies.

Hi Davyd, thank you for checking it. It seems that bug 1732736 seemed to cause the regression.
I still could not reproduce the problem on my Win PCs, then I am still not sure which code caused the problem yet :(

This sounds similar to bug 1741297.

I re-enabled widget.windows.window_occlusion_tracking.enabled and updated yesterday. So far, I haven't seen the issue come back. On the flip side, in the interim, I've had to reload my machine, so I've moved from win10 to win11 - I hope this hasn't affected the outcome.
