[Description:]

IMO, the "Always Open Similar Files" checkbox should reflect both default or user_picked application

[Environment:]

Windows 10, Mac 11
96.0a1 2021-11-11

[Steps:]
  1. Start any download, e.g: : download firefox 0.10.1
  2. Wait for download to finish.
  3. Right click on the downloaded file and select "Always Open Similar Files"
  4. Navigate to about:preferences / Applications and verify the selected option.
  5. From about:preferences / Applications select "Use Other" and select a different non-default application.
  6. Restart the initial download, e.g: : download firefox 0.10.1 in a new tab.
  7. In the download panel right click on the downloaded file.
[Actual Result:]

The "Always Open Similar Files" is checked off, checking it again would reset the custom application to the OS default.

[Expected Result:]

The "Always Open Similar Files" should remain checked on when the action is "Open with Other"

I agree this can be a bit confusing since the option suggests both configurations: opening with either the OS default or another handler.

Priority: -- → P3

This behaviour was also noted in Bug 1738706 (particularly in the description's additional bugs and comment 7). I believe we will be reaching out to UX about this.
