mozilla hangs when trying to access preferences and consumes up all memory

i cannot access edit->preferences anymore.
the browser hangs,
windows 2000 task manager shows that it is using 99% of cpu,
and the memory usage increases constantly (500 KB/sec).
i have to kill the mozilla process to end this.
this problem started about two days ago (oct 11).
de- and then reinstallation did not solve it.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. click "edit" in upper menu line
2. click "preferences"
Actual Results:
browser hangs, etc. see "details"
Expected Results:
open the preferences settings.
