Overview: -------- I have noticed some bizarre behaviour in the mail reader, where mail folders are nested. My mail comes from an IMAP server, and mail is stored in various folders (work, not work, bureaucracy, etc.) underneath my Inbox folder. Upon upgrading from 1.1 to 1.2b, I noticed that only some of the subfolders underneath Inbox were expanded in the Mail window, while the others could not be expanded, even though subfolders did exist. To make sure that the folders were still there, I ran 1.1 with the same profile; the subfolders appeared correctly and could be expanded and collapsed at will. Going back to 1.2b with all of the subfolders collapsed, the only folders that are visible underneath Inbox are its direct children. In pictures: At 1.1: + Inbox + Admin (subfolders under here but not expanded) + Work (subfolders under here but not expanded) + Not Work (subfolders under here and fully expanded) - jokes - sport - etc. At 1.2b: + Inbox - Admin (no subfolders now) - Work (no subfolders now) + Not Work (still subfolders here, still expanded) - jokes - sport - etc. Back in 1.1: + Inbox + Admin (subfolders under here but not expanded) + Work (subfolders under here but not expanded) + Not Work (subfolders under here but I collapsed them) Finally, back in 1.2b: + Inbox - Admin (no subfolders now) - Work (no subfolders now) - Not Work (no subfolders now) Steps to Reproduce: ------------------ 1. Install Mozilla 1.1 or earlier and run it. 2. Create some nested folders in Mail, underneath Inbox. (My server uses IMAP but I don't know whether that is key.) Create at least subtrees of folders underneath Inbox, and make sure that the subfolders go at least two levels deeper than Inbox. 3. In the Mail folder tree, expand one of these nested subfolders and leave the rest collapsed, as shown in the first example above. 4. Install Mozilla 1.2b and run it. (I have 1.2b and 1.1 installed side by side.) 5. Open Mail. The folder tree will be incomplete. Results: ------- In 1.2b, the expanded folders will appear correctly expanded, but the collapsed folders will appear as though they have no child folders. Recall that the entire folder tree appeared correctly in 1.1. If 1.1 is still installed, you can verify that the tree is still intact by running it and opening a Mail window. Build: ----- The incorrect outcome was verified on Mozilla 1.2b, running on Red Hat Linux 7.1. On the same computer, Mozilla 1.1 showed the correct results. Both builds were installed using the TARred installers, not the RPMs. Workaround: ---------- Changes the /usr/local/mozilla symbolic link from the 1.2b directory to the 1.1 directory, and run 1.1 instead. Other information: ----------------- I've listed this as a "critical" bug in the report. If you can't see your own mail folders and can't subscribe to them, I can't see this as being anything less than critical. If that's wrong, feel free to change it.

Reporter, are you using the modern theme? If so, this could be bug 174831 -- the twisty (expand arrow / plus) is just invisible when the folder is collapsed. Please try with the classic theme. That bug should be fixed in nightly builds since 2002-10-17
Tuukka Tolvanen, Yes, I am using the Modern theme. The collapsed icon (the right arrow) doesn't appear in the Preferences window either, but you can expand it with a double-click, and the expanded icon (the down arrow) appears correctly. In Mail, double-clicking a folder opens that folder in a new window, which is not usable. Still, this is probably a duplicate of Bug 174831, as you suggested. I am downloading a nightly build and will confirm whether this is still an issue. It seems like we've already got a likely explanation, though.
Got nightly build 2002102209 from a local mirror - not the latest, but just to prove the point. Mail displays correctly and fully usable again for those of us using the Modern theme. RESOLVED DUPLICATE 174831 No, I'm not calling the expanded/collapsed icon a "twisty". WTF? :) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 174831 ***
