1.2b displays all black pages for BBC News. 1.1 did not have this problem.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Go to http:\\www.bbc.co.uk
2.Select link displayed at approx centre of page entitled "BBC NEWS" (link is
http://news.bbc.co.uk/shared/hi/interstitial-news.stm)
3.(Alternative: select any of the two or three news items found under "BBVS NEWS".)
Actual Results:
A page full of blackness
Expected Results:
Display page to select whether you are in the UK or not. Note that if you've
visited BBC News in the last month or so, and allowed it to set a cookie, this
page will be bypassed, and you should get a page of news instead.
This disn't happen with Mozilla 1.1, and I don't think it happens with Windows NT.
Have tried this with Java disabled, Javascript disabled, images disabled,
colours disabled, fonts disabled, with and without cookies enababled. Have also
tried with a new profile.
Revert to 1.1, and the site works again.

Did you select US or UK news?
Is the Page completely black? Or just parts of it?
On the newsgroup, there were many people that didn't have this problem. Did you
try to diagnose it with them?
OS: OS/2 → All
Hardware: PC → All
1. It isn't UK or US, it's UK, or not UK, and it isn't possible to make any
selection because the page where one would make such a selection is all black.
View/Page Info shows no links either, so it can't be selected that way.
2. The pages are all black. I.e. the pages are black all over.
3. Not sure what you mean by diagnosing the problem with people who don't have
the problem. It was suggested that Java had something to do with it, but that
appears to be eliminated by disabling it.
I've now switched back to Mozilla 1.1 as it doesn't have this problem at all and
the Beeb is a fairly reliable source of information in these troubled times.
Changing platform back to PC: it's certainly not SGI!
Hardware: SGI → PC

It is not possible for me to get to this page.
Sorry, your instructions aren't valid for me.
Please save the source or something and see if it happens.
BBC works fine for me.
This problem appears to be associated with the ".stm" extension. 1.2b can
display the interstitial page from a saved file if the file has a ".html"
extension. Rename it as ".stm" and it displays an all-black page.
Having attached it with a ".stm" extension, it displays fine from Bugzilla! It's
going to need saving to disk (with the appropriate extension).

I think you have a plugin that handles .stm files.
This page displays fine for me.

Now you come to mention it, I do. It's Thetaband's Digital Sound & Music
Interface for OS/2.
Having reverted to 1.1, I find that it also displays files with ".stm" as
all-black from disk, but *not* when view from the actual site. Something's
changed here to cause 1.2b to send HTML to the plugin when 1.1 did not. Maybe
1.2b is ignoring the mime type and using the extension instead.

Yep. This is a cross platform bug related to your having a plugin that handles
STM files.
Copying peterl.
the STM plugin should NOT have been invoked in this case loading from the webserver)
My bet is this is the same bug that is causing the .au files playing on
newsgroups, however the fix for that won't fix this.
This is an HTML file that happens to have an STM extension and the plugin is
getting invoked.
This is wrong. The plugin should only be invoked if the mime type is correct, it
should not be using the extension only.

I can confirm that with this plugin removed (renamed), 1.2b can display the BBC
News pages correctly. So now I'll be sticking with 1.2b!

that was bug 169991, can you try tomorrow's nightly?

I'm going to dupe this off.

Re Comment #14, I can't confirm this is fixed in 2002102116 as the affected
plugin flatly refuses to show up at all in about:plugins now. Aaargh!

After a reboot the plugin appears, and the problem (with the BBC News pages) is
gone. (I think MMOS2 had got itself stuffed somehow, preventing the plugin loading.)
