1758956 - Open With saves a copy of file to default location after Viewing

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:98.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/98.0

Steps to reproduce:

Clicked on a link to a JPG file
Selected OPEN WITH from dialog box
Selected Applications\photoviewer.dll (default)

Actual results:

File opened in default viewer as requested.

After I closed the file, it had been saved to the default download location.

This happens with JPG and PDF files, probably others.

Viewing a file should not imply that I want to automatically save a copy.

Expected results:

File displayed.
When file closed, no copy should remain in default download location.

Can you give us a link where to test this?
Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Testing with a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

New install of Firefox on clean Windows 10 PC. New install of Firefox on clean Windows 10 Virtual Machine in VMWare. Same result.

click on a puzzle under www.autopuzzles.com/forum/rookie-autopuzzles
Click on the JPG link under the first image in the puzzle

File automatically saved to default download location

settings, files and apps, always ask where to save

in download list within firefox, right-click image,
select Always Open Similar Files

settings, applications, JPEG file type, Always Ask

click on a puzzle under www.autopuzzles.com/forum/rookie-autopuzzles
Click on the JPG link under the first image in the puzzle
Asks Save or Open. Select Open

File opens and downloads to default location, when it should simply open.

Will try Safe Mode and Nightly Build tonight.

Repeated above steps in Safe Mode, and in newly installed Nightly Build.

Results are the same. Opening file in default app also saves the file to the default download location.
