Whenever I use firefox i quickly have all of my memory used up by FirefoxCP Isolated Web Content. This issue started a few weeks ago and was never a problem before.

So, I don't see anything too outrageous in that memory report from comment 0. There's a facebook.com process that's taking half a gig, which is pretty big, and then reddit/youtube taking 250mb each. Andrew, do you see anything obviously wrong here?

Yeah, the memory report looks normal. We do have the issue that a hanging content process won't show up. Maybe if somebody is experiencing this issue they can also go into Activity Monitor and see what the memory values are in there, and get the PIDs of any content processes using a lot of memory, along with the about:memory report.

It looks like these reports are all from OSX, which is interesting. Stephen, have you come across any complaints about high memory usage on OSX recently?

I had a Webinar (edudip.com) today where I had to be online for at least a certain amount of time to receive a confirmation of participation which is worth 40 euros, and at the end i had to install chromium and continue on that because the process isolated web content ate not only my memory and cpu increasingly but also my network bandwidth (about 3Mbyte/sec) . So i lost connection and worse, couldn't even login again(witch dosn't have to do with Firefox). They had to send me a new link via email, which i opened with chromium where it worked 3 hours without problems. I don't know how to reproduce this error tho because now i have only youtube and this site open and now this process is unremarkable.

The latest memory report contains a lot of ghost windows for YouTube, and 1 for Wikipedia, so something is causing a leak. I'm not sure what it could be. Usually this is an extension but none of the extensions are obviously YouTube related.

I am still having this problem so much so that my 32GB Mac-Studio is past physical memory by about 20GB. If there is other information I should be submitting to help diagnose this bug, please let me know and I will get it for you.

seems to be a worsening issue and affects Linux also. I now only get minutes before swap is exhausted.

A kinda workaround is to open a tab with about:memory in the URL and select "minimize memory usage". That has to be done on my system fairly regularly before the machine freezes from IO thrashing on pageouts in swap.

From here you can also produce a memory report to file a bug although this seems to have been going on for years now so I suspect the developers are running relatively big machines and don't notice this issue.

Please file a new Bugzilla issue, in "Core :: Performance". A long list of people posting "Firefox is using too much memory" is not going to help anything get fixed. These are probably all unrelated issues, and figuring out what combination of website, hardware, addons and user actions is causing problems for you is difficult enough without extra other people chiming in.

The original reporter of this issue last logged in about 8 minutes after they created their account in 2022, so I don't think that report is going anywhere either.
