RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1752466

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:91.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/91.0

Steps to reproduce:

I am running the ESR version of Firefox. Yesterday Firefox updated to 91.8.0 esr. Today several times when I went to open Firefox, it would not load.

Actual results:

When the issue occurs, nothing happens. There is no error message and nothing loads at all. I just see one Firefox Process running in Task Manager. Otherwise it looks as if I had not started Firefox at all.

Expected results:

Firefox should load normally and access the Internet. The only way I can get it to work is by ending all Firefox Processes and trying again. Sometimes it will load Firefox and other times it won't. Once Firefox is loaded, everything works perfectly.

I am running webroot Anti Virus which recently caused a deadlock issue with Firefox a few weeks back. I am wondering if the Firefox ESR version does not have whatever fix Mozilla implemented for mainstream Firefox versions to address the Webroot deadlock issue? I suspect that this is what the problem is although on my computer the only issue I am seeing (so far) is Firefox just not starting at all. I don't even get as far as a blank page or websites not loading as was happening a few weeks back. It appears as if I have not even started Firefox.

Firefox 91.7 esr has been working flawlessly. The problems have just started since the update to 91.8 esr and I am guessing it's the Webroot deadlock issue with ESR.

Thank you.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Networking' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Does this issue still happen if you close webroot Anti Virus?

The only way that I can test that is to actually completely uninstall Webroot. I am not even sure that the issue is Webroot this time as it might not be. Would Firefox create any logs that would be of use? I looked in event viewer and there was nothing there.

I forgot to link to the other bug - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1752466 which may or may not be the cause here. I don't want to assume it's Webroot but that is a good starting point.

I was reading the other bug report and realised that the simplest way to provide information was to follow their instructions to create a Firefox dump file the next time it did this. I have uploaded the dump file here - https://dalacor.co.uk/Firefox/firefox.DMP
as the file is too big to attach to this bug. Hopefully this helps to identify the cause. Thank you.

I was having so many problems this morning, so I removed Webroot Anti Virus. So far (touch wood), Firefox is working perfectly now. So it looks like a confirmed issue with Webroot again! I will update if I still experience issues with Firefox with Webroot uninstalled.

The severity field is not set for this bug.
:haik, could you have a look please?

I'm going to close this bug as a duplicate of bug 1752466 under the assumption the root cause is the same after @Dalacor reported the problem is no longer reproducible after removing Webroot. Bug 1752466 is fixed in 97 and has not been fixed in ESR yet. This makes a good case for fixing it in the current ESR.

@Dalacor, could you tell us which version of WebRoot you had the problem with?

Flags: needinfo?(office)

I believe the version I was running was 9.0.31.84 on the affected machines. It is now currently running 9.0.31.86. Looking at Webroot's release notes, they have just released 9.0.32.58 last week, however none of the computers on my Webroot console to have that version yet. I assumed that they have not rolled it out to our systems yet.

I am not sure if their latest version is the one that fixes the deadlock issue, but that was my understanding. Thank you.
