hi,
there are audio cracks while playing youtube videos in macOS under at least the following conditions (mine):
- using macOS Monterey any version up to 12.3.1
- using Firefox at least in the versions 96-99
- using youtube playing anything
- using a M1 chipped MacBook Pro
- happens more often when the mac is under heavy load
For me it happens every few minutes (up to 30mins) when I don't use the mac for anything else and several times a minute when it is under heavy load.
To me as software developer it seems to happen whenever a stream changes to another audio buffer or something (I don't know how streaming is done in particular, but I could imagine that the audio is not a non-disrupted-stream all the time...). It sounds like the audio buffer couldn't be updated in time or if the audio buffer was read out of bounds. I got a bit of experience with audio buffer coding, so that's what my guess is listing to my guts, but of course I don't know it.
The problem seems to be very hard to track down. But after several months having an eye on it and blaming apple for it, it boils down that it only happens for me when audio is being played back by firefox. I'm not sure if it is only related to youtube videos, but that's where most of the audio in my browser comes from... It started when I got my new Apple M1 Pro MacBookPro 14" 6 months ago with macOS Monterey... Didn't have any issues with my MacBookPro from 2014 up until macOS Big Sur... A ton of variables changed of course during the switch, so I can't tell what exactly changed...
I followed the following thread in the apple development forum and a lot of people are having issues with audio cracks... not all, but most during audio playback on youtube:

It seems there were issues with audio playback since a long time, but it started to increase with apple silicon hardware... Nevertheless, as I said, I only got problems with the audio from Firefox...
So I know, this is not a bug report someone likes to have as there are millions of variables in there... But there is an issue, apple does not seem to care as they never replied to the thread, to bug reports in their feedback app or anywhere else, and at least for me it seems that it only happens in Firefox and none of the proposed fixes in the thread fixed it yet...

This sounds like bug 1752345, but that has been fixed on the Fx98. But you said you can still experience the issue on Fx98 and 99? Also, would you mind to test the latest Nightly to see if the issue still exists or not?

There are subsequent improvements in 99. I'm aware of problems with audio on M1-based macs, but I can reproduce in most apps, not just Firefox.
But I can only reproduce the issues on a specific M1 Pro 15" mac that belongs to a friend of mine, and only when the output is on an external pro audio USB sound card (an Audient iD14). My M1 Max never has an issue with audio not matter how hard I push it, as long as Firefox is >= 98.

Hey Trick, are you still running into this issue?
Hey... now that you ask... I don't remember having had this issue during the past few weeks... I'd be cautious saying it's gone, since it was there for a long time... Also I'm not sure that the problem was only on firefox' side... people in other forums are still complaining about this issue... So maybe give it another two weeks before closing this thread... I will have an eye on the issue and tell you should it occure again
