Build: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021024 I'm missing a simple way to download files. As for my system, Mozilla loads a Quicktime Plugin if I enter the address to a MP3 file in the URL bar. Maybe it would be an enhancement and useful if you could enter a URL and download this file without displaying anything (just load a progress window or the download manager). So you maybe have CTRL+ENTER to open the url in a new tab and ALT+ENTER to download the url.
It already exists for links : shift-click (ctrl-click on a Mac)
I know that but it's a pretty difficult way to open composer, paste the link there, save the HTML file, load the HTML file and make a shift-click (or right-click and "Save Link Target As...") on the link :).
Have you tried changing your Quicktime plugin settings? In the control panel choose Quicktime - Plugin - MIME settings. There you can tell Quicktime not to start for certain file types. If you want a general feature like entering an URL into download manager, that sounds nice (to me) and I could not find a duplicate of it.
Well I want to decide myself whether to open a file or to save it to disk. As of plugins I must hope that the plugin provides something like a "Save As..." function. Why not add a generell function for have the choice to open a url or to save a url? You have this possibility with links so why not have it with the URL bar too? But I wouldn't rely on the download manager. I don't use the download manager, for example.
The missing 'Save as' function of plugins is of course no mozilla bug. So I assume this bug is only about a way to enter an URL *for downloading, not viewing*. I think that sounds somewhat reasonable... Places for this might be the 'Open web location' menu entry in the 'file' menu. There already are options to open in a new tab, new window etc. - so there also could be an option for saving to disk.
That is, what I thought of.
Summary: [RFE] Simple way to download files → Simple way to download files
Let's get this off Asa's plate: component: Download Manager summary: Download a file by entering its URL
bug 97123 implemented shift+enter in the urlbar to save a file, therefore marking this bug as a duplicate. However, that feature was broken by bug 164006, for which I filed bug 181724 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 97123 ***
