Details

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #1600153 +++

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:101.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/101.0

Steps to reproduce:
Have no open Firefox windows.
Click a link from within anything (e.g., from an email)

Summary:
Clicking on a link outside of Firefox (e.g., in a mail message in any app), two Firefox windows are always opened. The first one is blank while the second one contains the webpage of the link.

Actual results:
Two Firefox windows are opened. The first one is blank while the second one contains the webpage of the link.

Expected results:
Only one window should open.

This a clone of bug 1600153, just as a placeholder to make sure that it's known this bug still exists and affects current releases of macOS as well as the older version mentioned in the initial bug. As I'm unable to add comments to the original bug (because of a lack of permissions), this was my only option.

As you can see from my colleague's description above, the solution to this bug is unlikely to be as simple and obvious as its symptoms; thank you for bearing with us while we prioritize and schedule the work we need to do to to get it fixed.

This is outrageously humorous, or evil. Well it's just outrageous period that FF or Mozilla or whomever still - YEARS later - will not fix it. I was the one who reported it, began this thread - and now LOL I'm blocked. And here was not the first time I reported it as it had/has been happening for years.. Mozilla must hate all things Mac.

I don't get it either. Kris Wright picked up your ticket to work on, and I even exchanged some emails with her a while back about it, and they said they had found issues with the commands being sent to Firefox to launch it that were (seemingly) the cause of this bug, but then it went silent and I haven't heard back since.

Just like you, though, I want this fixed. It doesn't really hurt anything per-se, but it's annoying to have to close an extra window every time you launch Firefox from clicking a link.
