Do you use an nividia card ?
if yes : Please update the drivers because this is a bug in the old nvidia driver

Yes, updating the nvidia driver helped. Thank you.

Just for curiosity: What does Mozilla do with the graphic card, what other
software don't?

stretching an image internal. Many other applications seems to work around this
but nvidia fixed it very fast after we found the problem

marking dupe of bug nvifia (read the whole story there). 
BTW: You should also note in your bug report that win98 is very instable after
this crash
