User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/105.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Normally starting (opening) Tb and Calendar

Actual results:

In Calendar many random events are totally missing when Tb and the Calendar are first opened, and only become displayed again after I toggle some future months ahead and also change from multiweek to month and back, and so forth, when finally all the missing events are displayed in the calendar again.

Expected results:

All events saved in the calendar should be displayed in the calendar, not randomly missing many events.

Component: Untriaged → Calendar Frontend
Product: Thunderbird → Calendar

Clicking on the < and > button numerous times and then clicking on the Go to TODAY button eventually populates (fills-in) the missing calendar events on the calendar itself and the events window. When you are not able to see your calendar events the calendar is worthless!

Select repeating events (e.g. repeats every third Tuesday of every month) are the events that are often missing and don't populate (fill-in) when the calendar is opened.

BTW, what is that little icon symbol supposed to be that represents a repeating event? It looks like a tiny headset - whatever it is makes no sense. There needs to be a separate icon symbol for edited/modified events that represents an edited/modified original repeating event.

Look at the 'Calendar Tweaks' add-on: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/calendar-tweaks/

I'm hoping this input may help the team to resolve this missing event problem. I typically always use my calendar in 'Multiweek'. I find that in 'Multiweek' (and also in 'Week') if I advance to the next Multiweek I am missing numerous events. However, if switch to 'Month' those missing events (in Multiweek and Week) are no longer missing. PS- The Events in the next 31 days, 14 days, etc. is still not displaying correctly - which may somehow be connected with the above condition.

This problem is beyond frustrating. A multiweek or month calendar that has numerous missing events is totally worthless. This problem cannot be fixed soon enough.

Things you can do to help us find the issue:

  1. Version number, OS, any add-ons installed? This is a local calendar(not caldav, gcalendar)?
  2. Reproduce it on a new profile, and give a numbered list of actions to perform that consistently result in the broken state.
  3. Report if there's any calendar related errors in Tools -> Developer Tools -> Error Console

FWIW, on TB102.3.2 on Win10, I created an event repeating every third Tuesday of the month. It was loaded on restarting Thunderbird several times without any issues, in the multiweek and week views. I'm not aware of any other reports of similar issues with the local calendar(this doesn't mean there aren't any).

Tb Version 102.3.2 on Windows 10 Home Version 21H2.

Add-Ons: ImportsExportTools NG, Manually Sort Folders, Restart Button, Smart Templates, Xpunge, MailHops (disabled)

No actions needed to result in broken state - just opening Calendar

Untitled-5.jpg: Week view with missing event for October 8 in the Today Pane
Also note that there are no events are in the 'Events in the next 31 days' box

Hope this helps!

(In reply to codename from comment #22 - correcting grammar)

Referencing 'Events In The Next XX Days' box at the top of the calendar:

If I edit one or two events in the calendar then those particular events that I had opened (as if to edit) and saved (without editing them) are then displayed in the 'Events In The Next XX Days' box at the top of the calendar. Opening as if to edit events somehow triggers something that enables me to choose 14 days, 31 days, etc. and those events are displayed in the box.

Is there a timeline when I can expect these calendar related problems to be fixed? For all practical purposes the Tb calendar is worthless in its current state with only a small percentage of events being displayed.

Because my Tb calendar is missing important events it is totally undependable and useless - I have now missed the target date to withdraw my RMD (required minimum distribution), been late to wish my son a happy wedding anniversary, missed a doctor appointment, missed an important board meeting, failed to renew my expired electric utility contract. I'm afraid I will miss other important dates and events. Will Tb pay the penalty if I miss my Federal Estimated Tax payment?

What is taking so long to correct this major calendar problem?

Is the anything I can try doing or provide that will help resolve this problem? Its been over 2 months since reported and the bug is still not even assigned.

With all add-ons disabled:

Multiweek View:
Restarting Tb without Calendar and opening Calendar in Multiweek view has missing various events missing. Clicking on Today makes no change as various events remain missing. However, clicking on < for One Week Back makes all events visible, including those events that had been missing.

Clicking on Today or > One Week Forward in Multiweek view results in the same missing various events.
Restarting Calendar in Multiweek view produces all the same results as noted above.

Month View:
Restarting Tb and opening Calendar in Multiweek view but changing to Month view makes all events visible, including those events that had been missing in Multiweek view. Restarting Tb and opening Calendar in Month view makes all events visible but rolling to the next month makes that month have various events missing. Rolling to future months all have various months missing. Clicking on Today in Month view makes all events visible again.

Restarting Tb and opening Calendar in Month view makes all events visible, however clicking on > One Month Forward results in missing various events regardless how many times > One Month Forward is clicked. Clicking on Today in Month view makes all events visible again for the current month.

In summary:
It appears Multiweek view with Today and Multiweek view with > One Week Forward has problems.
It appears that Month view with rolling to the next month and Month view with > One Month Forward has problems.

I sure hope this information helps you figure out what the problem is with the Calendar so it can be fixed quickly.

Additional Info:

Opening TB in Month View makes all events visible, however:

Clicking on > One Month Forward results in missing various events regardless how many times > One Month Forward is clicked. However, by clicking on Today, it does something that [then] allows clicking on > One Month Forward to begin working as it should for all future months.

Additionally, the 'Events in the next x days' and other similar choices such as 'All future events' doesn't work correctly and reacts strangely by only displaying Holidays category events and no other event categories.

How/Why these calendar actions may be intertwined or connected as a common denominator that causes this calendar behavior I don't know, but hopefully it will offer a clue about what or where the problems are so it can be fixed.

If I toggle the < and > on either side of the Today button I can eventually get the numerous missing events to display on the calendar in both Multiweek view and Month view. However if I close the calendar and then restart Tb there are numerous events missing again. It appears the missing events problem has a definite connection somehow with starting Tb or restarting Tb.

This missing events problem in the Calendar has been going on far too long!

Wayne, Andrei, anyone - Please tell me what I can do to help you to fix this calendar problem. I'm told there is some logging information that could be helpful to get it fixed but I am not familiar with how to access it and get it to you. Any help on accomplishing this would be appreciated. I'm at the end of my rope. I'm losing my patience. My calendar, which I depend on a whole lot, has been problematic and basically worthless for 3 months! Am I the only Tb Calendar user that has this problem? What can I possibly do to help out? Please...

Hi codename, first of all, very sorry for the inconvenience! I understand your trouble when events aren't showing in your calendar. There's a couple of similar bugs, although probably not enough to claim that this is a frequent problem. We have a lot of reports to look at, and there's no way we can look into everything and fix everything at the same time, so please be patient. We understand that your calendar isn't working for you - no need to repeat that in every other comment. 3 months is actually very young for a bug. And of course we can only fix it if we can reproduce it with steps provided by you, so let's focus on completing some information in this bug report :-)

Thanks, that might help. Here's how to enable calendar logging:

≡ > Preferences > General > [Config Editor…]
You can set the following preferences to true (ideally on a small calendar!):

  • calendar.debug.log
  • calendar.debug.log.verbose
Severity: -- → S2
OS: Unspecified → Windows 10
See Also: → 1796158, 1326548, 1694709

See attached debug file for Ref Bug 1790869

Please let me know if this debug file was performed correctly. I've never done this before. If I failed to do this correctly, please let me know and I'll try again.

This may help - Beginning with Tb restart each time:
To display the missing calendar events in Month view I must go forward (>) or backward (<) in time one year (12 months or 12 clicks) or more. But in Month view I can also go forward (>) 6 months and then backward (<) 6 months for the missing events to display.
Similarly, to display the missing calendar events in Multiweek view I must go forward (>) or backward (<) in time 17 clicks or more. But in Multiweek view I can also go forward (>) 9 clicks then backward (<) 9 clicks for the missing events to display.
Let me know if you want a new calendar debug logging file and if so which of the above four series of actions you want to be logged.

It certainly looks like (with a few restarts to check) that Update 102.6.0 fixed this Bug 1790869 problem as well as the other associated problem (i.e 'No Events in the next 31 days' box). Thank you!

Based on the error log above with the presence of "death by recursion" and the fact that 102.6.0 appears to have fixed it, I think this was a duplicate of bug 1789437.

Feel free to reopen if you see the same issue again.
