Steps to reproduce:

Save Page As

Actual results:

Firefox seems to go download the page

Expected results:

It should save the currently displayed page.
Why? Because the page could have changed. Reddit, for example, constantly has pages being modified and such. If I load a page, keep it open in the browser, then the page is changed, I click save page as and save it I get the new updated page and not what I'm seeing visually. I can't recover what I'm seeing and don't even know that I'm downloading the updated page.

This is not the behavior that one should have for Save Page As. It should save what one see's and expects. If one wants the current page one can refresh then save page as immediately afterwards.

The method means that if a page is changed external to the browser it will save that change even if, say, the page is deleted... one will download the error message rather than what firefox contains within the browser which may be more useful.

To be clear, Save Page As should save the local page data that one expects rather than simply downloading the url.

Save Page As seems to effectively do something like:

save(getData(currentURL))

rather than getting the file source and images and such in the local cache of the page.

The reason why saving the local data is preferred is that the current behavior makes it impossible to recover what one expects they are saving... but having the correct behavior I'm suggesting lets one get the same behavior by simply manually refreshing the page before doing save page as. Hence the preferred method is more robust and useful.

I tried reproducing your issue on a number of webpages on Ubuntu 22, Windows 10, macOS 12. Would you mind answering a few questions so we can investigate this further:

• Could you please explain the behaviour a little more? In what way is the page changed? From my current understanding the persisting issue is that the page saved with "Save Page As" will default back to the top of the page instead of loading the exact position of the stream when saving the page. Is this correct?
• Could you please provide a screenshot or recording of the issue so I can understand it better?

Setting the Component to "File Handling". Please change if you think there's a better component.

I can't add any pics and files now but it is rather obvious:

1. Firefox doesn't save page and reports "failed"

2. Firefox does save page and reports "failed"

3. Firefox does save page and reports "success" [This also happens if one retries the failure from 2(clicking the retry button in downloads)]

4. [Files simply don't exist since firefox failed to save]

5. [Files exist]

6. [Files exist but different than those from 2]

Someone suggested somewhere else that it could be due to ad blockers removing some content which is why 2 happens. Why though are there different paths? Either clicking refresh downloads the file differently(e.g., re-downloading the source directly without any adblocks and such but this causes issues with dynamic content)

The fundamental issue are these:

1. One cannot distinguish case 1 from case 2. Both report fail but the only way to know is to go look in the saved dir and see if the file exists. This can be time consuming.

2. Case 2 and 3 differ in size and one can't know why. Is it just because of ad blocks removed some extra stuff?

3. If clicking retry downloads something different(I can see this happening since the page might not even be in a browser tab) then any dynamically loaded content probably would not have been loaded. [This suggests that the downloader should actually load the url in a browser tab(hidden say) and allow some time for the page to load and possibly automatically scroll some to load extra content(one might want to allow some more intelligent methods to handle sites that dynamically load. E.g., a save file handler that is a javascript snippet one can write that will let them execute the code on the page before it is saved]

So the fundamental issue is consistency. I can't know, when I save a file, what is going on unless it says success... and even then what I think I'm saying and what is being saved might be two different things. E.g., I might want to capture some comments on a reddit page which are only loaded when scrolling down a bit... if I save the page and it "fails"(but the file exists which I'll have to check) then click retry will I get those comments? Probably not.

[I have a script that automatically expands all the comments. If I want to save that page I'll use save page as... it will fail... the file will exist though. If I click retry in the downloads(thinking that maybe it did not save it) I'll be asked to overwrite. If I use a different name and compare the sizes the 2nd one is much larger... but probably doesn't have the comments. I can't compare them though because each show a blank window when viewed in the browser(I'll have to go to the source code but I'm sure it will just show the 2nd one has more junk but less comments)]

I see. As far as I know, the behavior you described( with Fx failing to save the page) seems to be similar to bug 1445211.
As for Firefox saving a page and displaying it as a blank page, I think there are some limitations when trying to save websites that have an infinite-stream applied, especially if they're filled with a lot of content. I can reproduce the blank window when opening the same file into the browser after saving it via "Save Page As.." but this seems to be only reproducible on other webpages that have the infinite-stream enabled, such as Facebook and Twitter. The same results can be seen whilst saving from Chrome or Edge.

That might be the main bug. Instead of saying failed it could simply say "partially failed". All it has to do is check if data was downloaded or not... possibly give the amount: "Partially Failed(1.3MB d/led)".

This would distinguish it from Failed and success and at least allow me to know when the d/l failed to download anything so I can retry to get some data.

As far as the blank page, it could be due to what you say but when I checked it does save the data(some of it) because it exists in the source. It seems though that whatever script is used to load the data does not load it for viewing correctly when viewed offline. While this isn't great, I'm more concerned about archival so as long as the data is there I can worry about getting it to view later.
