email link fails with Thunderbird running

Steps to reproduce:
Click: File | Email link...
Actual results:
Error message
Expected results:
New message created with the link.
If TB is not running, it works. If TB is running already, the error message is obtained.
This has to do with the either the way that the FF call is made (which I suspect) or the way that TB handles it. It has been denied that it is a TB problem and I was directed to the FF forum, and now here.
Other programs do the job properly (Acrobat, Acrobat Reader, ThumbsPlus), why not FF?
