User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:106.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/106.0
Steps to reproduce:
In settings the "Startup: Open previous windows and tabs" checkbox is checked.
Windows. 106.0.5 (64-bit). The problem is happening since 2 days or so.
Reproduce: Firefox, bunch of tabs open. Close window. Wait a few seconds (in case it takes a while for processes to terminate fully). Restart Firefox.
Actual results:
Firefox does not startup with all previous windows and tabs, but starts up with 1 blank tab.
Expected results:
Firefox should startup with all previous windows and tabs.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.
Hy, thank you for the bug report!
Do you have your History settings as "Never Remember History" or any custom History setting by any chance?
No custom History settings. History is remembered.
If I open Firefox by clicking on the pinned icon in my Windows taskbar, it only opens a blank tab. (and it seems extra glitchy today, closed again immediately twice so far. The icon's path is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" with no additional flags, no custom settings. )
If I open Firefox by clicking on the "go to this bugzilla post" link in my email, it does open my "previous windows and tabs". And nothing is glitching.
This is weird.
I tried to reproduce your issue on Windows 10, macOS 12 and Ubuntu 22 without any success.
Would you be so kind as to answer some questions so we can investigate this further?
- Does this issue happen with a new profile? Here is a link on how to create one: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles
- Does this issue happen in the latest nightly? Here is a link from where you can download it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/
- Does this issue happen when FIrefox is in Troubleshoot Mode? Here's a link on how to enable it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-troubleshoot-mode
- Could you please attach your "about:support" so we could narrow down the potential causes for this particular problem? To do that, just type "about:support" in Firefox's Address Bar, click on the "Copy text to Clipboard" button and paste the data into a text editor and attach it here.
If "Open Previous Windows and Tabs" is working properly after following the indications above then it might mean that some add-on or preference tweak caused the problem.
Moving the Component to "Session Restore". Please change if there's a better fit.
Thank you.
Thanks for the help so far!
I'm on Windows 11
- new profile: everything works correctly
- new profile, but signed in to firefox (so with all plugins loaded) - FAIL. Blank tab only.
I've not installed any new plugins in a long time I think and up to a few days ago everything was running fine. - troubleshoot mode: everything works correctly
- nightly : major Fail, won't launch/ instantly closes again multiple times. Reproduce: force-kill Firefox in Task Manager, and try to launch it. If I don't force-kill the still running processes, even after I exit Firefox it shows somewhere between 8 and 12 running firefox processes. When I launch firefox without closing those, Firefox does open, but still FAIl because it's only with a single blank tab.
Nightly - also still does the thing where it does open previous tabs if I launch firefox by clickling a link in Thunderbird, but on launch via the taskbar icon it only shows 1 blank tab.
Still working as it should work.
No idea what changed.
You can close this bug (I'll see if I can do that myself).
Running 108.0b2 on Win11.
