Steps to reproduce:

Play any video on YouTube

Actual results:

Firefox memory use skyrockets over 4 GB with no upper bound until the program crashes. In about:processes, Firefox shows most all of this memory use in the GPU process, going over 3 GB in that one process alone after only minutes of watching a video. Closing just the youtube tab reduces all Firefox memory usage even with multiple open tabs to ~600 MB.

This occurs with Firefox fully updated, refreshed, no extensions, and even after a full reinstall.

Expected results:

Youtube should not be constantly increasing the amount of RAM used up by Firefox's GPU process. This was not a problem until very recently, ~2 weeks.

There was a similar memory leak bug with gpu canvas(Bug 1778237) that was addressed in Firefox 108. Though it might not be related to this bug.

Thank you for about:support! It used Intel GPU and HW_DECODED_VIDEO_ZERO_COPY is enabled. Then video playback seemed not use huge memory. I wonder if Bug 1778237 might be related.

starkravingmad31, can you check if the problem happens with "pref gfx.canvas.remote = false"? Firefox needs to restart after changing the pref. Thank you.

Can reproduce a similar problem with Intel graphics OEM driver 30.0.101.2079 Rev.E and Nvidia driver 31.0.15.2656. Upgrading the driver to the non-OEM latest version (31.0.101.4032) fixed this.
