In the docs we say:

To ensure maximum support in database columns, labels must be made up of dot-separated identifiers with lowercase ASCII alphanumerics, containing underscores and dashes.

Labels do not end up as column names after all, but as the keys inside the metric field.
We therefore do not really need to restrict the format that much.

Should we just drop the limitations (keep length-limit)?
