Summary: Make search engine icons in awesomebar single click again → Make search engine icons in awesome bar single click again

you can hold down shift, shift+click will work immediately

I understand it's not very discoverable.

What's the benefit of doing so? Looks a bit complicated too me.

Opening it as an Enhancement, this was recently changed on purpose but maybe somehow pointing out that Shift + Click works would help those who miss this feature.

When there is an empty string then I would do what is currently happening without shift but when the string is empty (ignoring whitespace) then I would immediately run the search. We also could switch the behavior so that the current behavior without shift is available when holding shift and vice verca.

Unfortunately this is not something that can be decided by guessing what is better, it requires pondering from UX, and experiments to measure the outcome.
The current behavior was implemented because it allows to type a string and get search suggestions from different search engines, plus it allows to use the urlbar in search mode when search suggestions are disabled in the urlbar (e.g.g type string, click engine button to opt-in to suggestions pick one). It surely has positives and negatives, like any approach.
