Steps to reproduce:

I open a site, save it as a favorite and the favicon on the bookmark is shown on a white background, while the tab icon does not.

Actual results:

The favicon (icon) of the site, if saved as a bookmark (favorite) is displayed on a white background.

Expected results:

the favicon shouldn't be on any white background.

The problem only occurs on proton mail/ drive/ calendar/ pvn services and sites

Hi,

Neither the tab icon or the bookmark icon have a white background on my end, I have tried it both on MacOS 11 and Windows 10.
Could you attach a screenshot below of the issue?

Here's the attachment.
All sites appear normal, only proton sites have a white background. I tried the method you suggested, but it didn't work. The problem always occurs.
However, on the card, the favicon is displayed correctly, only if saved as a favorite it presents the problem.

I don't have a proton account, thus I cannot login to verify internal pages, but I suspect this is one of the cases where the icon is in a particular format and we either convert it or pick another icon.
Note, the fact the tab and bookmark favicons differ is not a bug in itself, it's expected in some cases, we must verify case by case.
This may be dupe of bug 1494016, bug 1792046, or bug 1337397.

I'm looking at the favicons defined on the https://proton.me/it/mail page:

https://proton.me/favicons/favicon-16x16.png
https://proton.me/favicons/favicon.ico

The apple-touch-icon has a white background. we may be picking this one because of dpi and bug 1494016.

The page also defines
<link data-react-helmet="true" rel="mask-icon" href="/favicons/safari-pinned-tab.svg" color="#6d4aff" />

And this makes me think the tab is likely using this mask-icon favicon, but bookmarks don't because of bug 1337397.
