Hey Brad, is this won't fix? Or are we hitting the 'capturing' case with PiP video unintentionally?

I'll try to replicate and figure it out.

Brad, are you working on this bug? As it is a P2/S2, any fix in nightly would probably be a potential candidate for an uplift to beta. Thanks!

I can't reproduce this on my MacBook Pro running macOS 13.1, attached to an external monitor. Is it still happening for you? If it is, would you please give more specific instructions on how to reproduce? For example, on which screen is the PiP window and is the video playing poorly in the PiP window or after you close the PiP window?
To be explicit about it, I have tried all these cases to reproduce and not been able to reproduce:
- Video start, PiP window on laptop
- Video start, PiP window on external
- Video start, PiP window split between the two screens
And then all of the above cases plus then closing the PiP window and the video rejoins the main browser window and continues playing without interruption.

Since I logged this issue I upgraded from macOS 11.6 to 13.1 but the issue is still here. I did not do any special steps unfortunately.
It reproduces for me just by having the Firefox (latest Nightly) on the laptop screen and opening the pip from the video from the demo page (or netflix) on the same screen (laptop screen). My secondary screen is empty, and is only needed to be connected to the mac, no other use in order to replicate the issue here. So the exact steps I am using are:
- Start Firefox on laptop screen
- Visit the demopage https://bitmovin.com/demos/drm (wait a few sec for the DRM software to be downloaded, if not already available)
- Play the video with the sound on
- Click the PiP button (the PiP window opens on the same laptop screen)
This is reproducible with the Firefox and PiP window located in any combination (both on same screen, each window on each screen etc).
More information about the setup I am using:
- I did try with different monitors both are Dell fullHD screens but different models.
- I have the screens connected with both HDMI cable and DisplayPort
- I am using a Docking station Dell Universal D6000 in order to connect my screen
- The macbook has the following GPUs: AMD Radeon PRO 5500M (PCIe) and Intel UHD Graphics 630 (build-in)
- Proc 2,3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 16GB 2667 MHz DDR4
- I also tried with multiple screen resolutions on both screens (same issue)
- As soon as I disconnect the external screen from the Docking station the image from the PiP window (which I left open) will suddenly appear and everything is fine.
Hope this helps. Let me know if there is any other info I can provide.

I can't reproduce it, not even with a clean profile. Found an Apple report on a similar issue using the Dell D6000 dock. Seems like an adapter issue. You might be able to update the firmware from a Windows device. There's also an alternate DisplayLink driver from Synaptics that might change how your adapter functions -- I'm not really clear on which parts of Displaylink are in the OS and which are in the adapter.

Many thanks for the links from above!
I did a firmware update and a driver update for the docking station using a Windows machine but I see the same issue if connected back to my Macbook. I do have some colleagues who also have this particular D6000 Dell, I'll check with them and see if they experience the same issue, will report back as soon as I have some results from them. Please let me know if I can help further with something.

I've asked two of my colleagues to try on their machines they have the exact same mac (A2141 EMC 3347) but different os versions (11.5 and 12.5) and docking station as mine and they are reproducing this issue as well. (I provided them with the driver/firmware from comment 6 as well so they are up to date as well) They reproduced before and after the updates to the D6000 brick as well.

Thank you. Do either you or your colleagues have access to a different type of USB-to-HDMI adapter to try out? This is looking like an adapter-specific issue.

I will talk to our IT peeps to provide me with one and report back when I have some results.

Also, to test the theory that this is adapter-specific, does the same problem happen for you in Chrome or in Safari?

Sorry it took me some time to provide an update here. I tried the same scenario using a cable usb-c to hdmi to connect my Macbook and the monitor I have and I can say that on this env I can't reproduce the issue here so its definitely something related to the Dell adapter I used.
I also checked on Chrome using Picture-in-Picture floating video extension and the Dell docking station and I have the same issue. Trying with the USB-c & HDMI adapter the video is played correctly so yeah this confirms that it has something to do with the Dell brick.

Thanks for checking it thoroughly. It's an adapter-specific issue that we don't know how to work around. I don't think we have any better option but to close this Bug.
