This, in my opinion, began when Bug 1788986 landed. First time I saw this spam lines was after that bug landed( Range where I first saw this ) and soon after I had to backout Bug 1788986 and the spam lines stopped showing up.
Recently, Bug 1788986 re-landed, and the spam lines started to surface once more. The spam lines are present on this green job, which is on the push where Bug 1788986 landed.

Checking MOZ_DISABLE_NONLOCAL_CONNECTIONS should fix this specific one, but I think maybe it's not following the user opt-out for telemetry either? Nick, did you do anything special to follow the opt-out when you implemented background updater task?

I agree. Generally, background tasks should read relevant prefs from the default profile for this type of use. But in your case the task is invoked from Firefox, and therefore it should pass relevant configuration on the command line. (Or serialize it in some known location for consumption.)

No: we don't run the background update task in automation; we unit its constituent parts. That will likely change in the next half or so as we implement some optimizations that need testing of the task and relaunching.
