I updated my Nightly today to a staged 20230306094520
. It restarted and restored only the non-pinned tabs.
I checked the Browser Console for session restore related logs, but there was only a bunch of ASRouter
stuff (probably from debugging a different issue some months ago).
I've turned on browser.sessionstore.debug
in case it happens again.

I recreated my pinned tabs manually and updated to 20230308094825
and it didn't reproduce.

Happened again, this time on Beta 112.0b5 20230321175953
(Windows 11). Same machine as last time. Different profile.

Has this happened since :chutten? Its pretty strange that only the pinned tabs would not get restored - if anything we might expect the reverse. Is there anything you can share about which sites you have pinned or how they are used that might help narrow down the issue here?

Luckily it hasn't happened since, and I fully agree it was and remains decidedly mysterious. My pinned tabs are GMail, GCal, Slack, and Treeherder. I don't do anything clever with them.
I'd be satisfied if you wanted to close this out since it hasn't happened in over 3/4 of a year. I filed the bug just in case it was catching something bigger earlier.
