User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/111.0

Steps to reproduce:

Literally anything. This issue will literally happen even if I'm not touching my computer and not doing anything.

For months now I've had this issue where the browser will freeze for a second or two and the window expands over the start bar.

At worst if I push any button or click when it happens it crashes the browser with no crash report.

It doesn't matter what I'm doing, watching a video, scrolling, typing, nothing. It happens. I've noticed that this tends to happen most after updates but it does go away after weeks.

Don't ask me to record or induce it, as I've said it's pretty much random but I do notice it happening more later in the day. It's 10:46 AM as of writing this and it's already started.

I want a permanent solution.

Windows 10. Latest version.

Actual results:

As stated it will freeze briefly for a few moments and overlap the bar at the bottom of my screen. It happens if I'm typing, if I'm just watching a video, or even when I'm just LOOKING at my computer. I can restart my computer to get it to stop but I refuse to accept that as an option.

I know from asking around that it's not just happening to me. There are certain sites like Tumblr that make it happen more but it will happen on any website.

When it does happen I can sometimes hear the fans in my computer get louder if that helps at all.

Expected results:

It SHOULD run fine without this issue happening!

OS: Unspecified → Windows 10
Hardware: Unspecified → Desktop

It SHOULD run fine without this issue happening!

That might not be Firefox itself but additional extensions, add-ons, plugins.

Does the problem still happen if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? (Safe Mode disables add-ons, extensions and themes, hardware acceleration and some JavaScript stuff in order to exclude some possible reasons for problems.) See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

And does this also happen with a new and empty profile? See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile

Because it happens at random I'm not just going to use safe mode all day. And I'm not going to wipe my profile just to fix something Firefox broke. I cannot state enough that I've seen that other people have this exact issue and unless we all happen to use the exact same extensions and stuff it's NOT on us!

Without any further information there is nothing that someone else could investigate due to lack of any pointers. Nobody asked you to "wipe your profile" either. Seeing "other people have this exact issue" doesn't help either as the outcome (freeze) can have many many different reasons. So stuff is on you to some extent if you want to see problems fixed...

I apologize for my temper but I'm just tired of this. I did manage to get it on profile recorder. https://profiler.firefox.com/public/kc0r33dzqd4qz6km76e15qgjwpkg13a1tzssn9r/calltree/?globalTrackOrder=0w2&thread=1&v=8

In the day since I did this the issue only started happening in the last hour and even then minimally so it clearly did something to help.

And of course as I'm typing this it just happened again so... shrug

This profile has some massive chunks in session restore.

Maswartz, did you have a lot of tabs when this happened?

I typically have around 24-30ish tabs open at any time.

Ok it was working fine but now it's starting to happen more and more again so I don't know what to tell you.

Thanks! Please open about:config, set layers.acceleration.disabled to false, restart Firefox and test if this problem still occurs.

Ok yeah it's just right back to the same level it was at before this. should I turn that back to true?

(In reply to Darkspirit from comment #8)

Thanks! Please open about:config, set layers.acceleration.disabled to false, restart Firefox and test if this problem still occurs.

This is honestly starting to make things a bit worse so I'm turning it back to True.

Wait, I did this and I just went to check it and it was back to true, what's up with that?

Hello! Thank you for submitting this issue unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce the issue with firefox 114.0a1(2023-01-05) on Windows 10. I will mark this issue as QA-not-reproducible.

Whiteboard: QA-not-reproducible

If possible, please test if this problem still occurs with https://nightly.mozilla.org.
Go to about:profiles in Firefox 112, open the folder (Root Directory: AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/...) of your default profile, close Firefox and make a backup of that folder.
Open about:profiles in Nightly, set above profile (of Firefox 112) as the default profile for Nightly and restart Nightly.

The severity field is not set for this bug.
:dao, could you have a look please?

from the look of the profile, this looks to be the same issue as bug 1849393, where there is discussion about possible fixes.
