Details |
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/114.0
Steps to reproduce:
These steps were performed in KDE:
- Open a video in firefox such as in youtube. Do not mute the video
- Open Volume in system tray and switch to Applications tab.
- Pin the Volume widget
- Change volume of firefox (just to keep track if its resetting)
- Pause the video. Then play video back again
Actual results:
- On pausing and playing again, firefox's entry in volume widget disappears and then reappears
- The new entry has volume back to 100% irrespective of the volume that was set by user
Expected results:
After pausing and playing, firefox's entry under applications in audio in system tray widget should not have reset, and should have preserved user set volume irrespective of the above behaviour.
Specs:
KDE 5.27.4, kernel 6.2.10-1-MANJARO (64-bit), Wayland, pipewire 1:0.3.68-1, firefox nightly 114.0a1, audio backend - pulse-rust

The worst is that when you play a video in YouTube then adjust Firefox per-application sound's level, if you play another video that per-application level is reset. This behavior is not reproducible with Chromium. See attached video for more info.
Firefox: 117
Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.7
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.109.0
Qt Version: 5.15.10
Kernel Version: 6.5.0-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
When a video is muted or paused, Firefox (ver. 132) closes the Pulseaudio/Pipewire stream—and creates a new stream once playback continues unmuted. This may contribute to PA/PW seeing it as a "new" application and thus using default volume again.

Hey Jan, any ideas on what we might be able to do to address this?
I am not versed in the details of PA/PW, but "don't close the pulseaudio/pipewire stream unless the tab itself is closed" seems like the most straightforward answer.

Hi, I'm sorry, I would like to help, but I have no experience with audio side of PipeWire or Pulseaudio. It might be best to ask upstream or look how this is done elsewhere, like in Chromium.
