[Affected versions]:

  • Nightly 114.0a1
  • Beta 113.0b9
  • Firefox 12.0.1

[Affected Platforms]:

  • Mac 12.4
  • Windows 10 x64
  • Linux Mint 20

[Prerequisites]:

  • Have a new profile with the following prefs set:
  • browser.search.region to US
  • browser.urlbar.quicksuggest.dataCollection.enabled to true
  • browser.urlbar.merino.providers to adm,top_picks
  • browser.urlbar.bestMatch.enabled to true

[Steps to reproduce]:

  1. Open the Nightly browser with the profile from the prerequisites.
  2. Type "whatsapp" in the awesome bar.
  3. Observe the Top Pick result.

[Expected result]:

  • The Top Pick result has an icon and a title.

[Actual result]:

  • The title and the icon are missing.

[Notes]:

  • There are multiple Top Picks that have missing icons or titles. You can find them here in the json.
  • Attached is a screen recording of the issue.

Thanks for the reports. Some missing titles are fixed via https://github.com/mozilla-services/merino-py/pull/280. As for the missing icons, it's expected to show the generic globe icon if we couldn't find any icon from the original page.

I have verified that the whatsapp suggestion now has the correct title, but is still missing an icon on the latest Firefox Release 114.0.1, Firefox Beta 115.0b4, and Nightly 116.0a1 using Windows 10 x64, macOS 12.6.5, and Linux Mint 21.1.

There have also been multiple changes for various strings and some extra sites still have issues with favicons, however those issues are currently tracked in DENG-916.

Considering this I'll mark this issue as verified fixed.

Thanks for verifying it.
