User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021016 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021016 I had a previous version of mozilla installed (1.1) which worked fine. Then I tried to upgrade to 1.2.1. The installation seems to work. After the installation, mozilla starts up normally. Then I closed mozilla. Every time after that mozilla will not launch. The quick launch tray icon appears but does not open mozilla when clicked. Also, when right clicking the tray icon, the (exit Mozilla) is not clickable. And, neither the desktop icon nor opening up Mozilla through the start menu will open up the browser. At this point, I decided to uninstall mozilla 1.2.1. At first I cannot uninstall mozilla because it is still a running process in the task manager. So I have to manually end the process. Then the uninstallation works. But, after the uninstallation, my previous version of mozilla (1.1) doesnt open either. So I experience the same problem with mozilla 1.1 only after the install/uninstall of mozilla 1.2.1. At that point, I tried to uninstall all copies of mozilla completely, and then reinstall 1.1. But I then experience the same problem all over again. I even formatted my machine and with a clean install of Windows XP, Mozilla 1.2.1 still would not work. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Mozilla 1.2.1 2. After browser opens for the first time, close it. 3. Try to run Mozilla Actual Results: The results were that Mozilla would not launch. Expected Results: Mozilla should have opened up normally. Machine Specs: AMD Athlon 2200, Abit AT7-MAX2 mobo, Gainward GeForce4 Ti4600, Windows XP Professional.

When you reinstalled the XP did you format the partition where you personal home directory is (actually I am only interested whether you managed to remove your earlier Mozilla profile)? Try to create a new profile and see if that helps?
Had this same problem on XP - Had 1.2 installed, when I installed 1.2.1 over it could start up browser once, but was unable to open any more windows (mail or navigator). I first tried deleting XUL.mfl - no dice. Deleting profile directory fixed this problem and let me start up fine. I had made some changes that the new version possibly didn't like in prefs.js or chrome.rdf. I restored the mail directory from the older version so I know the problem doesnt lay in there. When closing the main mozilla window while having the problem, mozilla.exe did not terminate properly. Started eating up memory until I killed it. Most likely error lays in the profile or the way the new mozilla reads it.

Reporter: *Never* overwrite previous mozilla ! You can break everything :-/ See http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.2.1/ "Installation Notes Install into a new empty directory. Installing on top of previously installed builds may cause problems." Closing this bug as invalid ?

does deleting registry.dat help? recent builds seem have trouble with multi-profile registry.dat (and registry.dat incompatibility as well)
Keywords: regression
Mozilla does not handle profile corruption very well. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 144027 ***
