[IMAP] sending mail causes mail notification (biff) if you have the
mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new pref set
here's what kerz did:
1) his sent folder is on imap
2) he set the mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new pref to true
3) biff interval set to 1 minute
4) when ever he sends, a minute later, biff fires, and tells him he has new mail
when we disabled that pref, it stopped happening.
there might be other scenarios (like with moving, or subscribing to a
previously unsubscribed folder with messages) that do the same thing.

Is this not just the fact that a copy of the email he sent has now appeared in
the "Sent" folder and the check_all still checks that folder too?
Even although the mail has been read already (as send items are marked as read),
it still finds a /header change/ for the messages in that folder and are thus
signifies the user of new mail.
Under my imap settings, I move my messages to a Trash folder when I delete them.
This also has the effect of throwing up a new mail indicator after a few minutes
(presumable as the Trash folder's headers have changed).
This is unconfirmed, but if it is agreed, then this should probably be changed
to WONTFIX. The only other solution if the above comments are true, is to have
an exclusion list for check_all_imap... but then as there is now and inclusion
list for IMAP when you don't have that setting turned on, then there seems
little point in this.

imho, I should get notified only for new unread mail, not new read mail.

This is probably true!!!
But what happens if you delete a new message, knowing it is spam for example,
before the system marks it as read. It moves to the trash folder as an unread
message. Should the system notify you then??? Unless the trash folder is handled
specially, I can't see an immediate workaround (though the last time I looked at
the Mozilla source I just about fainted!! LOL)
Depending on how many folder you /need/ to check, it may be easier just to check
those folders only when checking for new mail.
I've got loads of folders in my account, but I've only got about a dozen or so
Procmail rules for serverside filtering. I've now turned off this user_pref and
selected the individual folders for mail checking.
Just in case you don't know this, you can right click an IMAP folder and click
properties. In the window that appears there is a tick box that says "Check this
folder for new messages".
Doesn't help if you access the IMAP from different places where you have a
Mozilla setup, as you have to do this (rather boring task) in each setup.
I think there is a bug/feature request somewhere to include an interface that is
similar in layout to the Subscribe window that lists all the folders and allows
you to tick each one.
Hope this helps
