Details

At the moment in Nightly 116.0a1, the user has to always set the target language to which to translate on the about:translations page
Users will often want to translate to the same language.

The page should set the following defaults:

First time about:translations gets opened:

  1. Use the preferred language set in the browser if available.
  2. If 1. was not a match, use the language of the browser UI if available.
  3. Suggestion: If 1. and 2. were not a match, use the language of the OS UI if available.
  4. If not matches, don't select a language but require the user to choose it (current behavior).

When about:translations gets opened later:

  1. Use target language used the last time if still available.
  2. If 1. was not a match, not running the first run flow has the advantage of avoiding 'magical' switches. On the other hand, it can cause friction.

If the user never has to set the target locale later, they might miss additions of languages which might be preferred by them. Should there been an info area on the page which lists new languages until dismissed?

Priority: -- → P3

We're currently not focusing on this part of the UI, but this will be good to have on our backlog.

Summary: try to set preferred language or browser UI locale as default target language on about:translations on first run, later use last used locale when page gets opened again → Improve about:translations default language selections
