using the gecko 1.0 branch build 2002112016 on MacOS X, i cannot add the
bookmarks tab to the sidebar. not sure why not? has anyone else seen this with
Blackbird (recent 1.0 branch builds)?
Using Mozilla 1.4a Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US;
rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030312 Not able to replicate this bug. Given the date it was
reported I doubt it just got corrected in 1.4a nightlies and did in fact get
fixed in earlier versions or builds.

This effect happens now too with
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030820
My last version before was 20030814, where bookmarks were still present
in my sidebar.

I am unable to laod the bookmarks tab in the sidebar using the MacOS X build
build id 2003082103. I noticed that when I clicked on customize and tried to
maually add the bookmarks tab that when it moved over there were a couple of
blank lines after the last tab and "Bookmarks". When I dismissed the customize
sidebar button "add" the sidebar did not load the bookmarks tab.
Some more information ***VERY INPORTANT**** If you are going to test a build to
find out if this bug is fixed BACK UP your profile. When I reverted to 1.5b I
could not load the bookmarks tab. Something had been changed/corrupted in my
profile. Fortunately I had backed up my profile ***phew***
Does this bug effect the PC as well otherwise under hardware above it should be
changed to MacIntosh.

Also I believe this bug should be nomiated as a blocker for 1.5b or 1.5 since
for me Mozilla is not as usable without the Bookmarks Tab,

Have also seen this bug in nightly build version with BuildID 2003082304
(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030823) under
Win2K.

I read this post http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=173725#173725
were pouya reported that he had installed 1.5a & b and had not experienced the
bookmark bug.
Based on his experience I downloaded 1.5beta final and installed it in a
seperate dirctory. Upon launching Mozilla 1.5beta the sidebar loaded all its
tabs except the "Bookmarks" into the sidebar. (I have installed Mozilla before
into a new directory and upon launch the default bookmarks file is loaded into
the sidebar. Not with Moz 1.5).
I went to the "Customize Sidebar" at the top of the sidebar and attempted to
load the bookmarks manually. When the dialogue box opened it showed that the
bookmarks were already installed in the sidebar (although they would not appear
in the sidebar. I tried everything I could think of and could not get the
sidebar to load the bookmarks.
I wonder if this is a bug specific to MacOS X (all versions) or specific to
MacOS X 10.1.5 (the version I am using)?? Any suggestions which might solve this
issue. I would like to test Mozilla 1.5x.

I believe I have discovered the solution for this bug. The file "panels.rdf"
created in a profile using a version of Mozilla earlier than Mozilla 1.5(b?) is
not compatible with version 1.5b. Read my solution to make your current profile
compatible and work with Mozilla 1.5b.
Create a new user profile. You must do this using 1.5b. On the Mac (unsure about
other platforms) hold down the option key while you click on Moz 1.5b which
brings up the profile manager. Create a new user profile. Now swap all the files
except ONE to your newly created profile. Do not swap the file "panels.rdf" to
the newly created profile. Now everthing should work fine with Mozilla 1.5b. All
the settings from your old profile will be there in the newly created/modified
profile.
BTW if you want to continue using version 1.4 as well you will want to use the
older profile and not the one for Moz 1.5.
I am testing with a Mac. Can someone test this fix on Windows and if it works I
recommend closing this bug. Thanks.

Returning from vacation I installed
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030908.
At the beginning the bookmarks were not visible in my sidebar tabs although
configured. Then I deconfigured bookmarks from the sidebar tabs, left Mozilla
and reconfigured them (this procedure didn't help under version 20030820).
It was not necessary for me to create a new profile.
For the Windows version this bug has been fixed from my point of view.
I am using Mozilla 1.5b (Gecko/20030827) and I have had this problem also. I am
able to preview it in the Customize Sidebar menu, but no matter which slot I put
in, it never adds to the Sidebar. This is a major drawback in my mind, since
that is what I primarily use the Sidebar for, now that I use the Googlebar for
searching.

I tried the solution #7 of removing the file panel.rdf my default profile under Windows NT 4.0.
It works. I saw that my bookmarks tabs.

The Bookmarks as well as the history tab are not visible in the sidebar here.
I tried the workaround proposed in comment #8. I was able to remove all entries
from the list but couldn't any of the tabs from the 'available tabs' list to the
'present in sidebar' list after closing and restarting Mozilla.

I followed advice #10 and now everything is back again. I simply removed the
obviously corrupted 'panel.rdf'. A new one was created by the program and that
seems to have repaired the damaged sidebar.

I was able to do this in v. 1.4 however in 1.5 and 1.6a I can use the customize
and put bookmarks into the "tabs in sidebar side" but after clicking ok, it is
not visible as a tab in the sidebar.

Updating OS/Version, and bringing in the module owners.
This bug needs some serious attention, as it greatly reduces the usability of
the sidebar.
I can reproduce it in 1.6, win2K.

Here is the panels datasource that was somehow corrupted.
Comment 18•21 years ago
|
||
For comparision.
I shut down, renamed the bad file, and started up again. This is the new file
created. The Bookmarks panel shows up with this one.
The thing that jumps out is that in the bad file, the panel sequence lists
history, but it doesn't have its own Description.
The question is, how did it get that way?
Comment 19•21 years ago
|
||
Ah, so would you prefer it if the corrupted panels didn't display in the
customize dialog, so that adding them would fix the data source?
Comment 20•21 years ago
|
||
Well, removing the panel, and then re-adding it does not fix it so I am not
sure if this is an option.
Here is what I am seeing in the customize dialog. Compare with background open
sidebar. Note also the blank entries in the right panel.

Ah, well it turns out I was doing some unrelated sidebar work, but I think I
have been able to incorporate a fix for this bug in that patch.
Depends on: 135717
Comment 22•21 years ago

I applied (win2K, Mozilla 1.5) the fix in bug #135717, and can verify that it
does not fix this issue, even when re-added.
However, there are a couple of positive side effects, namely:
- blank entries (lines) no longer appear in the 'Tabs in Sidebar' column
- when I add the History tab and close the dialog, even though it does not
appear, it is not in the list of tabs in sidebar when you reopen the dialog (was
previously).
I must clarify, I am seeing this behaviour with the History tab, not Bookmarks
which is the description of this bug. I believe it is essentially the same issue
though.

I can however, verify that this problem is fixed in 1.6, without the fix! Oh the
joys of upgrading!
Reporter (Jay), can you verify if you are seeing this still in v 1.6.

I am no longer experiencing this issue with the latest 1.6 release on Win32.
Can't test on Mac b/c I no longer have a Mac. But from recent comments it looks
like this might be a candidate for worksforme?

OK, my fix in bug 135717 was bad, I'll update it.
BTW I have no idea why this might work in 1.6 as I don't have a branch build.

(In reply to comment #25)
> OK, my fix in bug 135717 was bad, I'll update it.
I tried that latest patch (again 1.5, Win2K), and it works! The corrupted
panels.rdf file is fixed once you add any panel, including the History panel.
Nice work.
I'll close this bug as soon as you check in the code in 135717.
> BTW I have no idea why this might work in 1.6 as I don't have a branch build.
The fact that it works is another good reason to close this one. It could have
been fixed by another checkin. If we see any bad behaviour in the sidebar
post-your fix, we can open separate bugs.

Same problem with mozilla 1.6-r1 under Gentoo linux. Just rename panels.rdf.
