This reverts commit 067495c9bcf678a8f3a8b8911d5852c146eff158.

We reverted due to mystery crashes involving Oilpan-delayed destructors;
we're relanding with explicit clear() to get them to be run at
predictable times, hopefully sidestepping the issue.
