RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1582795

People

(Reporter: gabriel, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/117.0

Steps to reproduce:

Using Firefox 117.0.1 on Windows 10, try to download a file (eg right-clicking an image, 'Save image as...') or upload a file (eg a photo to Facebook or a PDF to Cloudconvert).

Actual results:

Ever since the last update but one, every time I do this, Firefox completely freezes (greys out) and no matter how long I wait this doesn't resolve. In the end I have to click the red X icon at top right, completely shut down the programme, then re-open it. And it continues to be impossible to upload or download.
(If it's relevant, I also enabled sync at about the same time the problem started happening. Could this be the issue?)

Expected results:

Download and upload should work smoothly.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::File Handling' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

I tried to reproduce this issue on Firefox 117.0 (20230824132758) and Firefox 117.0.1 (20230912013654) builds using Win 10, but with no success. I was able to download/upload files without FF to completely freezing (I also tried with and without sync enabled). Are there any additional steps (settings) or something that I'm missing?
Thank you!

I had a similar problem for a few hours on 9/18. Then, after a pause, the problem had fixed itself without even restarting Windows. Some further details:

  • I'm running FF 117.0.1 on Windows 10 22H2
  • Firefox would become unresponsive on file uploads only
  • the hang would occur in the file picker dialog provided by the OS; upload through drag and drop worked
  • Edge was not affected

It doesn't sound like there's anything you're missing, sadly. But it's definitely still happening with me. Other browsers fine though.

I wrote too early :-( the issue is happening again today, and it does affect Edge too, but it is less prevalent and Edge recovers better (the file picker dialog hangs but Edge keeps responding). So at this point I think this is an intermittent (and recent?) Windows problem with browsers and specific folders.

I think this is a dupe of bug 1582795, the asynchronous file picker implementation should solve the ui hang problem here.
Unfortunately this is a problem affecting other products too, so we can only workaround the OS issue.

Sorry, I don't quite follow this - is there an implementation that fixes this issue?

It's an OS level issue, we're working on a solution but it's not ready yet, it will be shipped in the future when that other bug will be marked as fixed.
