There's a variety of nonsense going on in this benchmark (eg using for-in to iterate the keys of an array), but mostly it just looks like we spend longer in overlayLetter, which is doing a bunch of number-crunching array math to compute a convolution. I suspect that this is just another instance of us being slightly worse at that.
