User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130 This is my first bug-report to Mozilla; sorry if I'm missing things. (And btw, thanks for a totally cool browser.) I probably have the component (Download Manager) wrong, but it was the closest I could see. Also, I tried this in Mozilla 1.1 and get the same problem. I'm simply attempting to download some *.Z files (i.e. unix zipped files), by the names of SAMRAI-v1-2-0.tar.Z, SAMRAI-v1.3.0.tar.Z, and SAMRAI-v1.3.1.gtar.Z. Clicking on the first two yields the download dialog. Clicking on the third yields an error dialog saying, /tmp/bbo8qq3y.Z could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator. The 'bbo8qq3y' part seems random and changes each time. I'd figure it was a site error but for any of the 3 links, Netscape 4.78 will bring up the download dialog and (upon selecting the location where I want to save the file) download the file successfully. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: I can tell you that other people are experiencing the same problem, but unfortunately, allowing you to reproduce will be difficult, as it's a password blocked site and I don't have permission to give you the password. However, I was able to get the page source from the final page with the problem and that may be helpful. I'll stick it in the "Additional Information" section. Let me know if any additional information may be helpful--I'll try to provide what I can. The info from "View Page Source" on the affected site:

SAMRAI Software Download

SAMRAI users,
Thank you for registering.

We appreciate your interest in SAMRAI. Okay, I've got a machine with Mozilla 1.0.1 on it (also linux--a Redhat 8.0 machine). It behaves slightly differently. The download dialog window pops up, then I can select a place to save it as, and then it proceeds to the little download progress dialog--which instantly says that it's finished. Looking in the directory shows a file of size 0 bytes (the real file is 24.9 MB). So, Mozilla 1.0.1 has a slightly different problem than both 1.1 and 1.2 have, but all three version are able to download 2 of the 3 files (the .tar.Z ones as opposed to the .gtar.Z one) just fine. Also, I read bug 171441 anyway (despite it being windows only). I found linux also had a compreg.dat file and tried removing it, but it apparently doesn't help at all. Not that this helps as you already knew this wasn't a dupe.
i had this sort of thing too. windows 98se, though. mozilla is nice, i love the navigator tab thing, very nifty down with ms! i download a lot of ut mods and they usually are zipped i downloaded a few maps the other day, and i opened them from download manager with winzip i get an error about the zip file not being a valid archive (WZ errror 40) before this they always worked almost i just tried downloading a mod that i forget the name of, free something (inkless.com) and it worked if i used IE (i hate ie) and it didnt work in mozilla the site wz gives says that if theres an error during download or something, it could corrupt/alter the zip and it won't work so i think you should try to find out whats wrong with it, so i can download zips in mozilla!
