User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Android 11; Mobile; rv:121.0) Gecko/121.0 Firefox/121.0

Steps to reproduce:

Installed new Firefox profile and went into google settings and when I select "Safe Search" and hit Save, the page gives an error. As far as can be seen, the menu and settings are messed up on the screen, like the language selection table, and almost all the settings on this page are broken, displayed incorrectly, or not saved. After I also select the dark theme on the site, it doesn't fully apply.

Actual results:

The settings are not working properly and the site is broken.

Expected results:

Have the website displayed correctly and the settings selected correctly.

I also want to mention that it can be seen that the page becomes unsecured when I access the "Safe Search" settings. In the first screenshot you can see.

Do you have any extensions, such as uBlock Origin, installed? They might be interfering with the website.

QA: can you reproduce this website problem?

I didn't install any extension and I didn't change any settings in the app, everything is with new profile.

I'm not sure ,but it could be google's problem?

The "Safe Search" settings url is http protocol in the page ,"<a href="http://www.google.com/url?url=/safesearch%3Fhl%3D......" , and when requesting this url with https protocol instead , the error will not happen.

So if you enable the https-only mode / or visit in private mode, the 500 error will not show.

About dark theme.
This is just google's default dark theme for non-chrome User-agent.
If you install Google Search Fixer addons, then you will see the same dark theme view with Chrome.

Anyway the settings page is broken at the moment and a solution needs to be found to get it fixed. Maybe it will be possible to put the original google site in Firefox as well, it would be necessary.

Solution 1) Enable the https-only mode / or visit in private mode
Solution 2) Use "Google Search Fixer" Add-on

I can reproduce this bug in a new profile without any extensions. The SafeSearch link on Google's Search Settings page points to an insecure URL (something like http://www.google.com/url?url=/safesearch%3Fhl%3Den%26prev%3Dhttps://www.google.com/preferences/...), which causes an HTTP 500 error page.

I will move this bug from the Fenix component to the Web Compatibility component and ask the Webcompat team about reaching out to Google to fix this.

Severity: -- → S2

Priority: -- → P1
Product: Fenix → Web Compatibility

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Load google.com in Firefox Android.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  3. Tap the "Settings" link.
  4. On the "Google Search settings" page, tap the "SafeSearch > Blurring on" link. If you long press on this link, you will see that it is an insecure http:// link.
  5. On the "Google SafeSearch" page, notice that the address bar is shows a lock icon with a red slash, indicating this is an insecure http:// page.
  6. Scroll down and tap the "Confirm" button.
  7. Google will show an error page that says "500. That's an error".

In addition to this error, it can be observed that after this error is reproduced, we go back to the settings page and hit "Save", it will show the "Safe Search" page again. And the Webcombat team to contact google also about the dark theme not completly displayed and to upgrade the settings interface as well.

eclaudiu64, thanks for reporting this bug!

I verified the fix in Firefox 120.0 and 122.0a1.

And the other errors, which are still on the settings page, can't be solved?

Flags: needinfo?(cpeterson)

Sorry. I forgot about the page issues after the Safe Search settings. I'll reopen this bug.

Can you attach a screenshot to this bug? The language selection table and settings seems to work for me.

After I also select the dark theme on the site, it doesn't fully apply.

I can reproduce this bug. Here's a screenshot of dark mode in Firefox 120.

For comparison, here's a screenshot of what dark mode looks like in Chrome.

In addition to the error with the dark theme, there is also this: after we select from "safe search" an option, after we give save, after regen automatically in settings, but if we give save to all settings, the page regen to "safe search" setting. It should return to the search page.

Thanks for the screen recording. It helped me reproduce the problem. I will share this new issue with our Google contact.

In addition, the Google Search settings page's "Cancel" bottom doesn't work. I expected it would return me to the Google search page, but nothing happens when tap it.

Why not directly install the Chrome agent for Google Search and solve all the errors?

Flags: needinfo?(kberezina)
Flags: needinfo?(cpeterson)

Because "just spoof as Chrome" does not solve all errors, and it can create several new ones.
