I have recently refreshed my Windows 11 installation, reinstalled Nightly and used Firefox Sync to sync my data. (I did not copy over my older profile folder.)
Before that, there was a "New private window" item on the taskbar jump list that I've used regularly. Now it's gone missing. (I'm not sure if there was a similar item on the Start menu jump list. If yes, it's missing as well.)
Could it be behind an about:config pref that we've switched off lately or is this a bug?

Hi Selim,
Is the option to open a private browsing window available in the AppMenu or in the File menu (if you press Alt to reveal it)?

If you set browser.taskbar.lists.legacyBackend
to true
in about:config, and restart the browser, does the item return?

Yes, it does. (It required restarting Windows as well.)

Hm... and then if you flip that preference back, does it go away again?

Hrm. That's not great - it means we may have wiped out the conditions that were creating the bug. :/
I think we might have to close this as INCOMPLETE for now. Selim, if you happen to notice this again, please comment here and we can re-open and we can collect more diagnostic information.

I'm not planning to reinstall Windows soon but wouldn't working on a virtual machine help?

If it's reproducible doing so, it would!

Hey TaniaM, do you think QA would have cycles to try to help reproduce this one? If so, how do I put that in the queue?

Hi Mike, This was assigned to my team yesterday but it was EOD for RO team, we are looking into it and will report our findings here shortly.

Hello! Sorry for the late reply, I tried reproducing the issue but with no luck by following the next steps:
- Installed the latest Firefox Nightly and signed in to sync
- Verified that the
New private window
option is displayed in taskbar jumplist and start jumplist (note: all options appear after a while after a fresh install) - Opened Reset this PC and choose
Remove everything
(Remove apps and files. Clean the drive & Reinstall Windows from this device) - After Refresh I reinstalled the latest Nightly, signed in to sync, and waited for the taskbar jumplists to be displayed.
A.R: The New private window
jumplist option was displayed after a while inside the taskbar and Start > All Apps.
We performed the above steps on the same Windows 11 VM installation twice with the Clean the Drive option (Cloud install and Local Reinstall) and another colleague on another Windows 11 VM install without the Clean the Drive
option, only with apps and files removal and we could not reproduce the issue.
Are there any modifications needed on the above steps that you performed to reproduce the issue? Thank you!

Ah, I was wrong stating that I refreshed my installation. In fact, I performed a clean install via a USB installation media. I've used the latest ISO file downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 and installed all Windows updates afterwards. Currently I'm using Windows 11 Home Single Language 23H2 (build 22631.3007) in Turkish.
I've used the system like this for about a week and the "New private window" option never appeared for me.

Thank you for the information. We will try again tomorrow with a clean Windows 11 installation on a VM using the information from above and leave a comment here with our findings.

Out of curiosity, I just performed a clean install on my VirtualBox with the same installation media and I was able reproduce the issue.

Hello! We tried again by installing Windows 11 Home Single Language 23h2 from https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 in English and Turkish on two different VM machines.
On Turkish VMs We followed the next steps:
- Download the iso and install it inside the VM.
- Updated Windows to the latest version (22631.3007).
- Installed the latest Nightly and verified that all jumplists are displayed with and without sync.
On the English VM, we installed the latest nightly before updating Windows, checked the jumplists, then synced, updated Windows 11 to 22631.3007, and checked the jumplists and we still cannot reproduce the issue.
Are we missing some steps here? I yes can you please tell us the exact steps to reproduce it? Thank you!

What I did yesterday on my VM was simpler:
- Install Windows 11 Home Single Language (Turkish) via USB on Oracle VM VirtualBox.
- Login to Microsoft account during installation and set up as new PC (do not sync from older backups).
- Install Nightly and check the jumplist.
As you can see, I've refrained from installing Windows updates and syncing Firefox but it made no difference.
I'll attach a screenshot for you to observe what I see.

From what I see from the screenshot you are missing all jumplists not only the New private window
one. The jumplists appear only after some time on a new Firefox installation. This happened in all the above cases for us as well.
Can you please open Firefox, and some random webpages in new tabs to make some History and leave it open for a while? After some time the jumplists should appear automatically. Thank you!

OK, I can confirm that the jump list has been populated after visiting some websites and keeping Firefox open for a few minutes.
Although that's not what happened on my home PC. I've used it normally for one week and never got the jump list. I guess we can't reproduce this for now.

Thanks for checking! I am going to close this since this can no longer be reproduced but feel free to leave a comment if the issue reproduces again and we can reopen this. Thank you!

I've refreshed my Windows last week and I'm having this problem again.
Mike, let me know if you need any information for diagnosis.

Various adjustments and fixes have landed for the jump list implementation. It's possible that one of them (bug 1890357 seems most likely) have fixed this issue for you, Selim. Are you still experiencing this on Nightly?
