Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:122.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/122.0

Steps to reproduce:

The active tab was open to a YouTube video, and another tab was open to Facebook Messenger. (Several other tabs were open in the background, but not relevant to this occurrence.)
In the YT tab, I pressed F6 to select the nav bar, then % Space to select tab search, then typed "messenger", used the down key to select the Facebook Messenger tab, and enter to select it. Instead of switching tabs as I had selected, it navigated to Facebook Messenger in the current tab.
After navigating to Facebook Messenger, the back button was unavailable, it didn't show any history to get back to the YouTube video
In settings under History>Recently Closed Tabs, it showed the YouTube video, but when I selected it a new tab would open to Facebook Messenger, again with no history/back button

I quit and restarted the Firefox instance and was able to reproduce this behavior (only after selecting the Facebook messenger tab and waiting a couple mins for it to become active.)

Actual results:

The tab did not switch as expected
The history was lost/became inaccessible

Expected results:

I expected the tab to switch rather than navigating the current tab
I expected that, after navigating the current tab, I should have been able to navigate back to the previous step.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Tabbed Browser

Could you test if you are able to reproduce this issue in Safe Mode? (Safe Mode disables add-ons, extensions and themes, hardware acceleration and some JavaScript in order to exclude some possible reasons for problems.)

Flags: needinfo?(andrewcombs13)

I have attempted to reproduce in safe mode. The behavior is different. When I navigate to Facebook Messenger, the history is maintained, but the new tab is not logged in, even though there's another tab open to messenger that is logged in, and remains logged in even when I refresh it.

It does also seem to possibly me showing me a Facebook Messenger tab from a different instance via sync, rather than the tab open in the browser I'm currently using. That tab doesn't appear.

Back in normal mode, I disabled Facebook Container extension and attempted to reproduce. Behavior was same as in safe mode. I then re-enabled Facebook Container extension and attempted to reproduce again. Behavior was as first described. So, the loss of history seems to be related to the Facebook Container extension

I did notice that it's still only giving me the option to select the tab from a different browser via sync, and not showing the option to switch to the tab active in the current browser. I tried to get a screenshot to clarify but the recommendations disappear when I open the screenshot tool.

I wasn't able to reproduce this last issue mentioned here.
Would it be possible to test using a new profile and let me know if you can reproduce same issue there?
It would be useful if you can details the steps taken and provide as much details as possible. Are you logged into your Firefox account when the issue occurs? Have you chosen to always open Facebook in a particular container?
