I think this happens on Linux as well.

Inbox unread message count is rarely correct,
it seems to be zero a lot. My comparison with 4.5
just now shows the total count to be correct,
mozilla is missing unread messages and shows 0.
Sometimes the count goes up, but it seems to be
always less than it should be.

Nope, things still do not match up with 4.5.
Imap, read mail/delete stuff, open 4.5 and compare,
unread message count is usually not high enough.
clearing res.
Fenella, can you try to find a case for this with steps?
Attached patch diff for this.Splinter Review
I think you posted this attachment in the wrong bug report? I just read another
bug report from you about posting a diff.
Thanks for pointing that out. Ignore the attachment dated 11/29/99 18:09. That
was for a different bug.
I'm seeing this on 1999120608 on Win98 as well. The mail folders pane indicates
that the inbox contains 2 unread messages, but on the inbox list on the
right-hand side, there are no messages bolded. Unless it's actually downloaded
the messages and not put them in the list....
fornixon, that might not be this bug. See 17427. Basically, if a message has
been replied to or forwarded but a message is marked as unread, the counts will
show it as unread, but it won't show up bolded in the thread pane. Is this by
any chance what you are seeing?
putterman: I doubt it. I haven't replied to or forwarded any messages in my
inbox. If you think it's way different behavior than this bug, though, I'll
create a new one. On a quick glance-over this seemed similar enough.
It sounds like what you are seeing is part of this bug. I just wanted to see if
what I mentioned is what you were seeing since I knew that it existed.
Target Milestone: M15
I see this all the time nowadays though I don't know how to reproduce it at
will. I think David has a similar bug somewhere. Anyway, should fix for beta.
If anyone has reproducible cases, please let me know.
I see this - I'll try to find a case for you over the weekend.
fornixon@globalserve.net is now the-enigman@home.com. Replacing old CC entry
with new one.

Win_nt 4.0 (2000-01-11-09 M13)
I tried it in POP and IMAP on both platforms, the unread message count looks
fine.
linux, imap, threadview.
I see 3 unread messages, unread message count says "1".
If there's no mechanism to find buried unread messages,
this number MUST be right so I know when to stop reading my mail.
Already marked re-opened.
Mass moving to M16 to get these off the M15 radar. Please let me know if this
is really an M15 stopper.

reassigning to bienvenu. I hope it's still ok to give you my message count
bugs. This may not be a problem anymore anyway.

I have not seen this in a long time. You may need to delete your .msf file in
order to get the count in sync, but after that it should track just fine.
marking works for me.
