Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:124.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/124.0

Steps to reproduce:

I feel that it would be a benefit to Firefox users that have multiple tabs open to see a pop up preview of the webpage so people can quickly glance at the webpage without having to deviate from their current tab.

Actual results:

No tab previews currently exist within Firefox.

Expected results:

Ideally, if a user has more than one tab open, a user could hover their mouse over a tab to see a quick image of the webpage of that tab. This could be useful for those who tend to have a lot of tabs open and often have to shift through several tabs just to find the one that they want.

This will be useful for those browsing images or resources and like to navigate pages of results using tabs, like if they just want to buy one thing and they need to decide on which one, it would be easier to see which to switch back to. Especially if you have many tabs open and they are too small to read the text.

There could be a setting that comes with this that users can disable if they do not like it or if their PC cannot handle it.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Thank you for your suggestion regarding tab previews in Firefox. We're glad to inform you that this feature is currently in development and is available as a work in progress. You can track its progress by referencing Bug 1783521 and Bug 1848157.

To enable this feature and start using tab previews, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open Firefox and type "about:config" in the address bar.
  2. Accept the warning prompt.
  3. In the search bar, type "browser.tabs.cardPreview.enabled".
  4. Double-click the preference to change its value to "true".
Once enabled, you'll be able to hover over tabs to see quick previews of the webpage content.

Additionally, if you wish to make the preview disappear, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. Open Firefox and type "about:preferences" in the address bar.
  2. Navigate to the "Tabs" section.
  3. Uncheck the option "Show an image preview when you hover on a tab".
In this case only the Title and the URL will be displayed.

If you encounter any issues while using tab previews, please don't hesitate to log them. All logged issues related to this feature can be found within the tracking bugs mentioned above.

Also, I will close this as a duplicate of Bug 1783521 .
