Search shortcuts do not work in search bar (only in address bar)

Steps to reproduce:
Make sure at least one search shortcut for a non-default search engine is defined in the settings. Prefix a search in the search bar (not the address bar) with this shortcut.
Actual results:
The query, including the shortcut, will be sent to the default search engine.
Expected results:
The search engine should have been switched according to the shortcut. I read the sentence in the settings, "Choose the alternative search engines that appear below the address bar and search bar when you start to enter a keyword", to imply that shortcuts should work in both the search and address bar – and you would expect search shortcuts to work in the search bar, wouldn't you?

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

The "legacy" search bar doesn't support a lot of feature of the address bar, and that's also why in general we suggest users to stick to the address bar, that is more than able to execute any kind of search, and also keep separation between urls and searches, with appropriate settings.
In the future we hope to be able to share the code and then this will be feasible, but for now there's no plan to port new features to the old search bar code.
Thanks for you response. Would you mind elaborating on the appropriate settings to keep separation between urls and searches? This is my main gripe with the address bar for searches: When I enter a search term and hit enter, the search bar contains the URL of the search results. If I then want to repeat the search with a different search engine, I have to enter the query again or copy and paste it from the results page. With the search bar I can just switch the search engine (but not use shortcuts).
