Steps to reproduce:
I started Thunderbird as usual
Actual results:
First time today, after starting Thunderbird the following message appeared: "You have reached the maximum number of IMAP connections", now sending of emails takes forever. I then lowered the default setting from 5 to 1, but no change. Then I discovered that apparently yesterday Thunderbird was updated to version 115.10.1. My suspicion is that it is a bug of the new version as nothing else has changed in the recent days.
Expected results:
nothing

Thanks for reporting. You are suggesting this occurs in 115.10.1 but not in 115.9.0. https://mzl.la/3Wcn82d are the Thunderbird bugs fixed in 115.10.1

I'm not sure what error message you are seeing based on this quote: "You have reached the maximum number of IMAP connections".
There is an error message produced by TB that is this (in English):
"Unable to connect to <your imap server name>. Please try again later. If the problem persists, you may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. You can reduce the number of cached connections in the IMAP server settings."
If this is the message you are seeing in your language, an alternate explanation of what it means is this:
"Unable to connect to IMAP server <server name> most likely due to a temporary network error. Another possibility is the number of connections allowed by the server has been exceeded by your devices. Use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings to reduce the number of connections used by Thunderbird."
So what I'm trying to say is that the message about "exceeded number of connections" may not really be due to that at all, but just a standard network error causing the disruption.

On the other hand, I just noticed that your email address is yahoo. If that is the account you are having the problem with, at times yahoo has had issues with more than 3 cached connections. But you say you have set it to 1 and still see the same error. Try using 3 and see if that helps (be sure to restart TB after changing advanced settings).
Another thing that I've seen with yahoo is they allow an alternate address for the server you can use which may work better. I'm using export.imap.mail.yahoo.com
with 5 cached connections in advanced settings and works OK with latest daily.

Yes, the error didn't appear in 115.9.0

Yes, you might be right, the error message appeared in German and at work and I tried to recapitulate in English once I was at home. It is most likely like your first quote. However, it happened the first time that they and repeatedly, even after restarting Thunderbird, after reducing the possible max. number of connections and restarting, and even after restarting the whole system several times. What also speaks agains a standard network error is that all the other functions (like synchronisation of calendar), receiving messages and synchronisation of messages after sending them within exchange (web-browser) worked perfectly. However, sending messages in Thunderbird fails constantly now.

Thanks a lot for your detailed observations and suggestions for solutions, this is highly appreciated! However, the yahoo email address is my private email address, but the problem occurs at work with a different email address, linked to an exchange-server.

So we can be absolutely certain 115.9.0 doesn't have the issue, please install an official build from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/115.9.0/. Thanks.

I also just noticed, after re-reading your comment, that the main problem you are seeing is with sending messages. It sounds like messages are coming in OK via IMAP (sometimes seeing the error about max connections) but sending is actually what is failing consistently.
Are you able to send messages via yahoo or other accounts with your home computer using 115.10.1?
Also, with your work computer using exchange, it is definitely using IMAP for incoming mail and SMTP for sending mail, right? I.e., it is not using any addons/plugins to access proprietary microsoft protocols?

FWIW, I just did a quick sending and receiving test of 115.10.1 using my outlook account (configured to use IMAP and SMTP) and I didn't see any problems. AFAIK, outlook (previously called hotmail) still uses exchange servers.

Yes, it looks like that it is only affecting sending message, although the error message pops up sort of randomly. (In reply to gene smith from comment #9)

Yes, the error messages pop up sort of randomly but it seems only to affect sending messages. I use Thunderbird only at work an only with the exchange server. And yes, it is using IMAP for incoming and SMTP for sending, and no add ons that affect this.

I also used outlook to test it, the problem only appears in Thunderbird.

When I said "my outlook account" I was referring to the email server belonging to microsoft that I created a free IMAP/SMTP account on. I'm not referring to the proprietary Outlook email/calendar program (which I don't have). So I only tested this with TB connecting to outlook.office365.com
imap/smtp (Exchange) server using TB.
