  • Firefox 128.0a1

Affected versions

  • Update from Firefox 127.0a1 to Firefox 128.0a1

Tested platforms

  • Affected platforms: Windows 10, Windows 11

Preconditions

  • Tested on the "nightlytest" channel.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install an .msi (2024-05-02) or an .exe (2024-05-05) Firefox nightly build.
  2. Change the update channel to the "nightlytest".
  3. Start Firefox, an update check will happen in the background.
  4. Restart for the update and repeat it, until your build is at a later version than the watershed (20240512212637).
  5. Verify the Control Panel.

Expected result

  • In the Control Panel there should be only one entry for Nightly Firefox build.

Actual result

  • After the updates there are 2 entries in control panel for Nightly - one for 127.0a1 and one for 128.0a1.

Additional notes

  • Observe this issue without watershed update, ex. after a single update from .exe build 20240505202839 - custom install to 128.01a - 20240514095049. With the same .exe build standard install the issue not occurs, only one Nightly entry appears in the Control Panel.
Summary: After an update in system Control Panel their are two Nightly entries → [Windows] After an update in system Control Panel their are two Nightly entries

Retested with nightly builds (without watershed) and it seems that the issue reproducible with custom installed .exe builds, after the update appears 2 nightly entries in Control Panel. Note that with standard install .msi and .exe builds the issue is not present.

Can we please check if this is reproducible on Beta or Release? If it is, we can confidently say that it is unrelated to bug 1889299.

Flags: needinfo?(btot)

Seems that this is also reproducible on Beta (update from 126.0b4 to 127.0b2) and on Release (update from 125.0.3 to 126.0) with custom install using .exe builds and new profile, both on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

No longer depends on: 1889299
