Dimming in video

I've been getting weird behaviour when watching videos in Firefox that is making watching things very frustrating at times and impossible at others:
When in full screen or PIP or regular window, frequently - like once every 5 mins - the picture either fades to black or to a washed-over grey, then returns to normal, like the contrast or brightness are being auto-adjusted.
Captions and the mouse pointer remain at full intensity, so it doesn't look like it's the OS doing the dimming. Also, I don't have MacOS set to auto-control brightness.
This is in FF Release 126.0 on MacOS Ventura 13.6.7 - but it has been happening for the last month or so, roughly, including earlier FF Release versions.
This appears to be happening in at least Netflix and Disney+
I can reliably repro using:
- Disney+: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, at a point between 1h 43 and 1h44, amongst many many others
- Netflix: The 3 Body Problem, S1 E2 at 39:20-23 and others - will add a better one when I find it!
I have rebooted and it still happens.
When I try to enable logging, FF Release crashes so I can't capture a profile. Potentially relevant crash reports:

Argh, typically, I think i have just spotted it:
In Mac OS I don't have auto-dimming applied, but I do have "Reduce motion" and "Dim flashing lights" enabled. The latter would likely explain what I'm seeing, though it's still maybe a surprise that it only affects the video frames and not the captioning layer.
So this might just be invalid - but that's a good thing!

This is definitely a "flashing lights" sort of scene. I am not able to replicate with on my setup with the "Dim flashing lights" setting enabled, but this is certainly the sort of thing it would be designed to alter.

These crash reports indicate we're crashing in the screenshot capture for the Profiler. Markus might be able to improve things here.

Given this is affecting only video frames and not captions, I wonder whether this is happening in a video decoder or in a graphics operation.

Circling back to try to avoid wasted effort, if I disable "Dim flashing lights", I can confirm the issue no longer seems to happen for me, so it was OS level.
The crashing of the profiler while DRM-protected video is running is a separate issue, and I can't speak to that.

Closing this bug because it was determined that it was caused by the OS "Dim flashing lights" setting.

Huh, I missed this. It's crashing when capturing screenshots of the video. Unchecking the "Screenshots" checkbox in about:profiling would work around this. I'm not sure if we can do anything about it other than file a bug with Apple.
