RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1790641

People

(Reporter: dafadllyn, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:127.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/127.0

Steps to reproduce:

Open a private window.

Download a file. -> File is in Download folder.

Close the private window.

Actual results:

Downloaded file no longer is in Download folder.

Expected results:

The downloaded file should not have been deleted!

I don't know if this is a bug or a feature, but if it were a feature it is a bad one that can lead to data loss, especially when coming from another browser that doesn't behave in that way or frequently switching browsers (e.g. between work and home). I'm not aware of any other major browser that deletes downloaded files after exiting private mode; even Firefox on Android doesn't do this.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Downloads Panel' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Downloads Panel

This is not Firefox behavior (tested on both Nightly and 127 on macOS).

Can you provide more information on how you installed Firefox on your system?

Maybe Firefox only behaves that way on Windows? Until recently I used macOS and never noticed this problem there.

I've installed it with the Firefox Installer.exe from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ globally to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.

I did several times and Firefox always behaved the same way: As soon as i close the last private window, the downloaded file gets removed.

(PS: The headings in the bug report were unintentional; I wanted to insert a numbered list. Sorry for that!)

Are you using the "open" option in the dialog by any change, or actually saving the file? The former is likely bug 1790641

I click on a "Download" button, which downloads and open the file in Firefox. (The Download icon appears or lights up and the downloaded file appears in the Download list.) Preferences > General > Files and Applications > Portable Document Format (PDF) is set to "Open in Firefox" (which seems to be the default setting).

I've just remarked that if i change this setting to "Save file", the file does not get deleted after closing the private window(s)! Thus it really seems to be duplicate of bug 1790641.

OK, marking as duplicate then.
