User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:127.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/127.0

Steps to reproduce:

Updated to version 127.

Actual results:

The Option-Shift-Left and Option-Shift-Right key combinations inside a text area cause the previous/next browser tabs to be selected. There is no way to select text one word at a time with the keyboard.

Expected results:

Those keys should have continued to work as before, following the MacOS standard keybindings. The existing keybindings for tab switching (Cmd-Shift-[ and Cmd-Shift-]) were entirely sufficient.

As a consequence, I will now find it hard to use Firefox to get anything much done, which pains me greatly.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Widget: Cocoa' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Are you using the Tree Style Tab addon? I was just able to reproduce this bug, but only with Tree Style Tab enabled as an addon. I have yet to find the setting in TST to turn this behavior off.

This section in the release notes is suspicious:

4.0.16 (2024.6.9):

  • Add new keyboard shortcut slots "Simulate Up/Down/Left/Right Key on Tree" and assign default shortcuts Alt-Shift-Up/Down/Left/Right. They provide both spatial focus move on faviconized tabs and collapse/expand tree like arrow keys on tree items.

I can confirm this seems to come from the TST add-on. Bad timing they both updated a the same time!

The quick fix to disable the shortcuts is mentioned on this Github issue.

Oh crap, yes, I am indeed using that extension, and I can confirm that disabling it resolves this issue. Apologies for the noise, and thanks for the pointer to the upstream fix.

In case anyone else encounters this, the shortcuts can be changed/removed by going to about:addons, selecting the Tree Style Tab addon, then clicking on the settings gear in the top right corner and clicking on "Manage Extension Shortcuts". You may have to expand the list to see the relevant shortcuts.
