User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/128.0
Steps to reproduce:
Wanted to translate a word from a website. Pressed right mouse button ... and unfortunately there is only English as a default
Actual results:
Wanted to translate a word from a website. Pressed right mouse button ... and unfortunately there is only English as a default
Expected results:
Wanted to translate a word from a website. Pressed right mouse button ... and there should be a way to set it to German. I downloaded all the dictionaries.
I use an English version of the browser with a German Windows 10. It is only possible if I change to browser language to German. Which I don't want to do.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Translations' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi Tobias, you can add German instead of English by going to about:preferences ->Languages-> Choose your prefered language for displaying pages->Choose, and add German(de-de). Once set, your next selection word can be translated to German. Let me know if this what you needed. Thank you.

That partly works, but it has the disadvantage, that I will get all webpages in German if available. And most of these pages aren't very good (e.g. IT documentation).
It should be possible to choose the translation default independently to the 'Choose your preferred language for displaying pages' settings

Hi Tobias,
I appreciate you filing this bug. It's always helpful to get more detailed feedback on how people interact with this feature in the real world.
I am currently working on Bug 1866827, which will mean that Firefox will recall your recently translated-into target languages. That is, even if your browser UI and web-preferred content languages are set to English, but you request to translate something into German, then German will be the top preferred language that is offered to you the next time you interact with a Translations feature in Firefox.
This doesn't expose an explicit user setting, but I do think it may help with your use case.
My hope is to get this included in Firefox 130, which will release in September, but you can follow along with Bug 1866827 if anything changes.

Hi Erik,
that sounds interesting. Thanks.
For the context, a lot of my friends and colleagues do work in Germany and are Germans, but use the English version of browsers and other programs.
IMHO and because you asked specific about user behavior. It would also be interesting if the translation feature would work with fewer clicks. Currently, have to mark the word, press the right button, and then press the translation text.
It could be appealing to have a (semi-) automatic translation feature like the one Babylon used 25 years ago. E.g. Just select the text and Firefox would pop up the translation text somewhere. Just as an idea to save user time to get the translation.

I'm glad you brought that up. We do have a potential feature design (Bug 1870338) to provide users a shortcut to the Select Translations Panel after they have selected text that is determined to be translatable.
A small icon would pop up near to the text that you select, which will allow you to access the translation to your top-preferred language with just one click.
I do not yet have a target date for this feature, but please feel free to follow along with that meta bug.

For the purpose of bug triage, I am going to go ahead and mark this as a duplicate of Bug 1866827, which should provide some solution to this.
If there is a further feature request beyond Bug 1866827 once it lands, a new bug can be filed explicitly for that.
