The word spacing slider does not result in any change to the spacing for Chinese/Japanese text, and presumably any other language with a character-based writing system. The slider should be hidden for these languages. The fix could be to use the HTML lang attribute to check if the article is in Chinese/Japanese etc. based on the country code, and hide the word spacing slider accordingly.
STR: Visit an article in Chinese/Japanese, e.g. http://www.firefox.com.cn/about/career/. Open the text layout menu, and under the advanced section toggle the word spacing slider.
Interestingly, word spacing does work for Korean since it's phonetic/syllabic!
