Attachment: This video shows the output of libinput debug-events, and it shows that GESTURE_PINCH_UPDATE is fired even tho Firefox detected it as a scroll.

Steps to reproduce:

Pinch-to-zoom in and out.

Actual results:

Sometimes the documents is scrolled when I pinch-to-zoom, or sometimes it just idles and nothing happens. I suspect the reason this bug happens is because Firefox is still loading the document.

Expected results:

The documents should be zoomed.

• Do I understand correctly that the issue is that during the first ~2 seconds in the video, where the video shows the document being scrolled down by a large amount, that you were actually performing a pinch gesture on the touchpad (and therefore expecting zooming in)?

Affected URL: The bug occurs on any pdf (it sometimes occur on other websites too, but when I perform a pinch gestures on those websites, instead of scrolling, nothing happens, here is an example: https://raytracing.github.io/books/RayTracingInOneWeekend.html)

Output: Not sure if this is the trigger, but when I'm inside a pdf, and when i hold down on the touchpad with two fingers, lift it, and immediately pinch to zoom it. Libinput sometimes show an output like this

Yes I know that the event POINTER_SCROLL_FINGER is shown in the output, and that explains the scroll, but this really only happens in a pdf, it doesn't happen in any other websites, on a similar output. This output also doesn't explain why sometimes when im performing a pinch gesture on the touchpad, nothing happens (not even the scroll).

Thanks for the added details.

I played around with pinch-zooming in Firefox in a KDE Wayland environment. Here are my observations:

• Detection of pinch gestures seems finnicky in general, even at the libinput level. That is, sometimes I move my fingers in a pinch pattern, but libinput debug-events is showing something other than GESTURE_PINCH_* (e.g. POINTER_MOTION).
• For gestures that are successfully detected as GESTURE_PINCH_* by libinput:
  • On https://raytracing.github.io/books/RayTracingInOneWeekend.html, they consistently succeed in triggering pinch-zooming of the page.
  • In PDF documents, they work most of the time, but occasionally I do get a gesture detected as GESTURE_PINCH_* which does not cause zooming. Note: in such cases, I do not get scrolling either; the document just does not move at all (or in some cases is doing momentum scrolling from the last gesture).

For this last scenario, a next step is to check whether Firefox is receiving GdkEventTouchpadPinch events when the issue occurs. If it is, the issue is in Firefox (either in APZ or pdf.js); if it's not, the issue is in GDK (or kwin_wayland or such).

FWIW, on GNOME Wayland (Ubuntu 24.04) the situation is same as what Botond commented in comment 7.

• On PDF documents, pinch zooming gesture sometimes triggers scrolling up and down

I was able to confirm that Firefox does receive GdkEventTouchpadPinch events when this happens, narrowing this down to a Firefox issue.

After some further investigation, the issue indeed seems to be in pdf.js.

I confirmed that APZ is dispatching wheel events with the Control modifier set correctly, and they are successfully arriving to the pdf.js wheel listener.

However, sometimes they don't get into the updateZoom() call here. I think the issue may be that this early return in case of scrolling is too aggressive -- I tend to notice the issue most frequently when I scroll the document and then try to pinch-zoom, and at the time of the pinch-zoom there is still a bit of momentum left over from the preceding scroll.

We explicitly wait for the end of the scrolling session to trigger some zoom event.
It has been made few years ago in order to fix:
https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js/issues/7022
When pinching on the touchpad we get some ctrl+wheel events which isn't great at all because scrolling and then fastly hit ctrl is then equivalent to ctrl+wheel, consequently, fixing this bug will make the other one reappeared.

I haven't come across any proposals so far.

I do see the benefits of having a pinch gesture event that's distinct from ctrl+wheel exposed to web content; I brought this up for discussion at our APZ team meeting, and it's something we plan to start a discussion about at WICG to assess interest.

Meanwhile, an idea for a short-term solution could be to use the "keydown" and "keyup" listeners to keep track of whether the physical Ctrl key is pressed, and only disqualify ctrl+wheel events from causing zooming during momentum scrolling if the Ctrl key is physically pressed.

It happens often for me as I read a lot of scientific publications. It happens with all PDFs I try. The PDF is fully loaded. When it stops working, it seems to help to scroll up/down a bit in the document or zoom in/out with the +/- buttons, and then it starts working again. To trigger the issue, I just scroll around and try zooming - it happens often. I don't need to reload the PDF or change tabs to trigger it again.

I would suggest filing a new issue about that, with some details such as whether you are using a mouse or a touchpad, and whether you only see it in PDF documents or regular webpages as well.

Im pretty sure the issue is not related to just documents anymore, cuz after an update (probably because of the 133.0 firefox update), the same problem I described on documents also happens on regular websites, just literally every single website, and it happens so much more often. Im gonna roll back my firefox version to 130.0 to see if the problem is introduced by the update or not.

Hello! I have tried to reproduce the issue with firefox 145.0a1(2025-09-17) and 142.0 on Ubuntu 22.04, unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce the issue. I can't pinch to zoom in any webpage or pdf.
Could you please answer the following questions in order to further investigate this issue
